Audio Readings Ahoy! And a Big Thank You to the One Who Made 'Em Happen! · 12:41pm Nov 14th, 2019

Blog Number 65: The Sounds of Generosity Edition

This week, a rather generous fellow named Quinch has given me something I haven't had in six years and ten months: an audio reading of my written work. It is amazing. :raritystarry:

What could be better than that? Well, how about two audio readings of my written work! :pinkiehappy: Double amazing! :raritystarry::raritystarry:

And now, a little background.

Although Quinch is a long-time fan, starting off with standalone Luna fanfic Losing Ground all the way back from August 2011, only this year has he become more active on-site. Or rather, more active on the Golden Oaks Memorial Library site and YouTube, since they began adding videos of their readings in August 2019 (starting with Every Rose Has Its Thorns... and a Shovel or Two).

To quote him directly:

It kinda came as a surprise to me too. But it turned out to be a thing I actually... kinda enjoy doing.

The first I learned of his work was on Thursday 17th October this year, when he asked me via PM if I'd like an audio reading of two fics of mine. This request came complete with a sample of their prior work (the aforementioned Every Rose Has Its Thorns), so I could gauge what my own would sound like.

Admittedly, I naturally agreed right away, because my word has it been a while since I've received such an honour. Nonetheless, I did listen to what he'd already tackled, and I liked what I was hearing. My enthusiasm increased over the next few weeks as he sent me samples of the work-in-progress. There's just something magical about the written word coming to life, especially when hearing your own work through a different voice.

I was particularly impressed by the work on Tavern Tactics. This was not just because, of all my fics this year, that one seemed the most obscure and overlooked. What I also liked was the way Quinch had to juggle a cast of seven plus and convey the humour in the more sardonic asides and build up to a more emotional dive in the culminating chapters.

Weeks passed. The project evolved over time: it turned out Quinch was experimenting with different ways of recording and editing the pieces, and occasionally I'd have a few quibbles about what I was hearing, such as minor errors and omissions here and there. We exchanged PMs to determine how to iron out the creases.

Honestly, though, from the beginning I was happy with what I was getting. I always looked forward to hearing each new version and how it had been tweaked and improved.

Now, voila! Two works of mine have thus been honoured with an audiobook version! Check 'em out - and please also check out Quinch's work - in the links above!

Quinch is a relatively new talent on the audio reading scene, so I look forward to their future work with great interest. Most notably, he's part of the Poniverse channel's audio reading project, (which also includes fellow reader Randimaxis's audio reading for Fallout: Equestria, so fans of the same ought to go check it out). Please go and listen to what Quinch and the team have done so far. And leave feedback, of course; that's very important!

So the only way to end is with a big thank you to Quinch for all his hard work. This is pretty much an early Christmas gift for me. :rainbowlaugh::twilightsmile:

That's all for now, folks! For the time being: Impossible Numbers, out.

Audiobooks are like buses; you wait forever for one to show up, and then two come along at once.

And if I may bring an old quotation out of retirement: "Haha! The fun has been doubled!"

Also, thank you too! :scootangel:

Hehe, that's a hell of a writeup - I really appreciate it. Like, a lot. Seriously. Thanks!

I do need to redirect some of the credit where it is due, though - the Poniverse channel isn't just mine, but rather for the Poniverse community itself. It just sort of got... rediscovered a little while back {the conversation, from what I've seen it, was along the lines of "wait, we have a YouTube channel? Since when? Does anyone remember who managed it? Or has the password?"} and is - currently - just being used to house the readings, but I imagine other stuff will be coming there as well.

Likewise, I'm not the one doing the Fallout: Equestria project - that lovely-voiced fellow would be Randimaxis, so he deserves props for that.

Oh, and thanks again! :pinkiehappy:

My pleasure.

Whoops! Too many assumptions on my part, there. Thanks for bringing them to my attention; I'll correct those errors right away.
