Interview with Quillian Inkheart · 7:09pm Aug 18th, 2019

Alright, now tell me my dear friend, what inspired your username?

Nothing all that grandiose; I just made an MLP sounding name for my Ponysona and OC and decided to make that my Username as well. Really, it was just how the chips fell.

“What drew you into Mlp?

I'd been a member of 4chan back in 2010, shortly after graduating high school. In those days, I was all about "anarchy" and "sticking it to the man" like any angst-driven teen is. However, when I stumbled on the growing community of bronies, I took a strange interest in the show. I watched it ironically for a while, but once I stumbled on some fan songs and some of the darker fanfiction, ironic enjoyment turned into literal enjoyment. Though I was quiet about being a brony till 2016, I've been around since even then.

“Who is your favorite pony and why?

Probably Octavia Melody, and the reason is simple; I wrote her. Now, I know I'm not the first to immortalize "Best Classical Pone" in fanfiction, but I like to think I'm among the best. As she grew in my story, she grew on me too. I got to understand her like I understood myself -- see her insecurities, her passions, and her love. I know that isn't her canonical persona, and if I'm going strictly from canon, I'd likely have a different answer. But in terms of overall, Octavia takes the win.

“Favorite episode and why?”

The Perfect Pear: A fitting conclusion to a long-standing fan theory, with a guest voice from William Shatner? And it was deep, emotiona, heartfelt, and genuinely beautiful? And it managed to make me cry? What more needs to be said?

“What inspires you to write?”

Music mostly. Oftentimes when I write, I've got one tune or another either playing or on my mind. A song for every situation, to set the mood and get the creative juices flowing. With the right beat, you can easily put yourself into the shoes of the characters in any given conflict, be it physical, emotional, or strictly mental. The power of music transcends it's own genre to melt into painting, drawing, writing, and more. It's why music is so unique as a medium; rarely do other artistic mediums inspire music, but music inspires others all the time.

“Tell us about your favorite story, and why it inspires you to write. It doesn't have to be mlp specifically!”

The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson: Sanderson is doing more than building a story; he's constructing a world. The book is thicker than a triple layer cake, and -- somehow -- twice as enjoyable. It's the only series to actually surprise me with some of the plot twists, as well as lay out bread crumbs to make some of the twists knowable from the beginning. The lore is well fleshed out and is ground in it's own flavor of logic. A very close second would be Mistborn by the same author, which has the same world building and style, but puts a spin on the classical fantasy genre; time actually progresses and technology progresses with it. By the second set of books, the world has progressed from knights and kings, to democracy and private investigators. And it's done in such a way that the shift doesn't feel jarring or unbelievable. Both of those series are must-reads for anyone looking to craft a deep and immersive world.

“Give us the background of the author! Tell us all about you. Well in a short summary.

I am boring. Bland as plain oats. Seriously, my life has been mostly meandering through my angsty teens years into a boring adult. I have no real relationships, no muss beyond what I've already stated, and ultimately, those muses are kinda lackluster and common. I suppose the only thing I've got going for me is a natural aptitude for grammar and a wide vocabulary, mixed with a strong creative mind. I was born to write.

“With Mlp coming to an end, tell us one thing you have learned from your experiences, and how it has helped you to grow?

Aside from the obvious "I can write!" MLP helped shape who I am today. It taught me methods of coping with my stress, how to socialize with people, and what true friendship is. More importantly, it gave me an outlet that helped shape who I am, guiding my views down a new path from where they were when I was a teenager. This show helped me grow; I'll keep repaying my debt to Friendship is Magic long after the show ends, by keeping it alive inside me, regardless of what others might do, say, or think.

“Is there anything else you'd like to say?

Just a few things: if you believe you can do something in the world of literature, then you likely can. A creative mind is all you need to bring a vision to life. With friends and contacts, you can even ghost-write a story, bouncing your ideas off people who have better pros than you, letting you get any vision onto paper with enough dedication and heart. Go give my stories a read; I put a lot of work into them and love it when people love them.

I really like the format that you decided to go with for this one, makes it a lot easier on the eyes.

A fellow channer eh? Good to see another in this place.

You can't trust that Quillian Inkheart! His heart is as pitch black as the ink it pumps out! He's a devious monster I tell ya!

Ugh, that was a looooong time ago. I was in Anon, since back in the early 2000s, that was the thing for any angsty, anarchy-driven teen with computer skills to do. I kinda regret that part of my life; it made me seriously paranoid about hackers.
