A JD Review: MLP Rainbow Roadtrip (2019) · 11:05pm Jul 1st, 2019

The half-movie special that birthed more waifus than I can count.

Kerfuffle is best new Pegasus and if you disagree then you're wrong.

Ohhhh WOW! This was a pleasant surprise! An hour long special after the mid-season hiatus AND it's animated in the movie format?! Count me in! Though the animation isn't as smooth as the movie, it's still welcome nonetheless. Plus, we get to see basically a stretched-out episode of MLP in this style of animation (perhaps the animators are testing out for G5, eh?). Regardless, we learn that Rainbow Dash was invited to a rainbow festival in a place called Hope Hollow, I think. Yeah, apparently she's famous or something. Who knew?

Upon arrival, the gang discover the loss of a certain technicolor aspect to their pony world. Much like Starlight's village only with less communism and vodka, the townsfolk seem to have lost a piece of themselves along with the color of the world around them. The various journeys of each pony to discover the cause and solution to these problems was fun, funny, and well worth the watch again and again. The music was also top-notch (especially the mayor's song. Very somber, very unexpected, but appreciated). The only downside I can see to this special would be that it tends to drag on a bit, and the mayor's proposal to Petunia kinda came out of left field. Oh, well. Kerfuffle is still adorable and this special was still great.

I give this one a 9/10! What were your thoughts? Who's still the best Pegasus after this special?

I'll give you a hint...

There’s a story behind how Kerfuffle got her prosthetic leg somewhere.

This was a very cute and heartwarming special. I thought the marriage proposal at the end was sweet, and it is actually the first one we have seen in the series. Now just a little longer before we enter the second half of the final season.

And the the villain of this special is..... apathy!!!

Yeah pretty cute special. Really cool to see the movie designs show up again. One thing I definitely think this special did better than the movie is giving each of the mane six something to do.

I think the Mayor’s song was the best. Was the song that got stuck inside my head.

So we now have an official word for the magic Discord used to grey out the mane six back in season 2. Hopeless magic... bit depressing there.

I do like the moral because sometimes just a nice hello can really help someone going through some bad times.

I just realized this special rips beat for beat a Disney short that involved Mickey, Donald, and Goofy dealing with the color being sucked from the world ‘n crap. I don’t know who on the writing team thought they could get away from that concept. But they tried, so I guess that matters (Not really, this and the majority of Season 9&8 feels lazy).

2662/10 animation good I guess.

I agree with everything you say , but I must add my own opinion too because that's the job I imposed myself . And that means ... Review time !

Ok , first . I really appreciated the thing , has you said , a stretched out episode is nice to see , even if you can feel that at some point , the guys didn't know if they where making a film or an episode , some things are very quickly told (the fact that to arrive in the city , they bump into a GIGANTIC bilboard that laters become at least 3 times smaller , or when the Mayor asks his crush , I'll talk about that later) and others take a long time (I mean , surelly someone would have noticed that this windmill got recolored , or that this patch of grass is now green , it's not like there is color everywhere , the town is monochrome !) .

For the songs , well , I generally don't pay attention to them but I have to say that they where nice .

The plot itself was classic but brought originally . I have to say that I really expected some Rainbow Factory kind of thing like they got catfished into getting here to be extracted to bring the color back to the town or something but I was really going too far . Some things could have been brought better like the two bakers not being able to take the Abricots just because they never thought that saying "Hello" was a good idea or the way they arrived in Hope Hollow (Legit thought that was Apollo at first btw) , like come on , a bilboard can be big but not THAT big , it would have been crushed under it's own weight if it was THAT big , or when the mayor asked his crush's hand hoof , yeah , it's nice and we got a small "back story" during the thing with them having interaction and all but a Proposal was kind of ... Wow . But all around , it was really good and those small problems can be forgiven

For the characters that got introduced , even if I am pretty sure we won't see them ever again , they where all quite unique , will it be the Bakers that are spoiled riches but not too much , the Abricot Grandpa that appears to be annoying but is in fact nice , the tailor that is 100% happy all the time , the engineer that is depresive but gets out of depression has soon has someone compliments her or the "I love you but I am too shy to tell you even tho it's obvious you love me too" couple , they all are unique in their own way and that is good to see . Not all people ponies in equestria are either very important characters or some random pony that gets associated with a number and nothing else .

Edit: I just noticed after re-reading the comments but yeah , that's the same magic has the Season 2 finale , boi , that's nice to see old things come back with an explaination !

Now for the Cuteness Ladder ... Oh boi , we have much to discuss , that "episode" was LOADED with cutness , the counter almost reached Cutness Overload , it has so many cute momments that it would take too long to cite them all , just watch the thing . it's an easy 11/10 for the Cutness Ladder .

And now for the final note ! All around , it was a really good "episode" for a first (not counting the movie) but needed some small adjustments . Nothing can be perfect but that thing is pretty close to it , that's why I give it a 18/20 !

Has always , hope you like my review and thanks for reading the wall of text !

I love the special. It was very cute and heartwarming. Kerfuffle and Petunia Petals are my favorite ponies in this special. The question is, how did she get that prosthetic leg? Did she have to cut it off in order to save herself? So many questions to ask.

It was okay, even if it had no real reason to exist.

I only had two nitpicks about this special, and one of them really pissed me off... to my knowledge, there was NO advertizing for this. By the time I found out this was airing, there was only 4 minutes left in the special and I had to wait til the next day to record it. The other was more of me just questioning why they did the movie animation instead of the normal animation. if your idea of them wanting to use this for G5 turns out to be true, then ill shut up there. but so far Im just scratching my head on why they used it. Other then that, Loved every minute of the special. In my Top 3 of Season 9... mainly cause I only liked 2 other episodes from what youve read of my thoughts

Yeah, there's a lot of grey area in that pony town, and I mean a huge grey area. Get it? Huge grey area.

And a couple o' grey areas in the special's quality too.

8/10.

*BOOF!!*

You ain't never had a friend like me!

5082696 I need to know that, or at least read a fanfic on it. Second best thing. :derpytongue2:

5082745 Hopeless magic is interesting. Does it just happen when ponies are sad?

5082753 Well, I wouldn't know that, so this special was pretty original for me at least. :rainbowwild:

5082778 An 18/20 seems reasonable.

5082787 Probably got in an accident or something.

5082788 No reason to exist except to test out this animation. :ajsmug:

5082838 Only reason I knew it was happening was because of Doctor Wolf. :derpytongue2:

5083033 That abomination still breathes...

As someone who has seen the special sometime last weekend, for me while it wasn't the 'best' special I've seen it does have it's likeable moments. Some of the new characters are fun to watch I will admit (Especially Kerfuffle), the animation (Though not as breathtaking as the film style) is still fun to see incorporated, and if this were a preview of what they have in mind for Generation 5, at least it's a decent first impression. But for me, it's the simplicity of the story that makes me feel this was more of an extended episode that kind of drags a bit, like I was always expecting this big twist to happen but never comes. The writing was clearly aimed to a younger audience even most adults will find it's story difficult to relate with, yet at the same time I did feel this was a Gen 3 story done right... Even though there was 'barely' anything at stake. Some elements I admit are a bit of a stretch (Like 'Hopeless Magic' is suddenly a thing now), some stories could've been further explored, and it's not as epic as I would expect, but for me the special in general... It was just 'okay', not good but not bad.

I was going into a more extensive review on my part but given the lack of certain materials I usually work with, the review of the special might be a 'slight' bit delayed until further notice. But I will definitely have something to make up for it because I do have a message for a 'certain' someone who's become familiar with my work.

5083421 Will Smith Genie.

5083682
Now that's just prejudiced. Jafar was the abomination. He was miscast.

Will did good, and didn't wanna be a Robin Williams No. 2.
