If I can be honest, I like the first one better. This is good art too though. ^^

This is basically the same picture. The new one is just cropped from the sides with the title at the top. I like this full image better also, though.

Honestly, I feel like you could have kept the full image and just put the title above the top in one line. But hey, your story. And we do still have access to this one.

I admit I have rather convoluted and OCD-esque tastes for avatars on here. I like them to be portrait in shape, both because it focuses in on the characters (no cropping would have made our buggos very zoomed out, and thier expressions are the entire point of this artwork), but also because the description text doesn't cut to continue below the cover when the cover is longer than it is wider, it typically just stays alongside it, which just looks better.

Also, yes, the likeness was intentional. They're two parts of the same scene, just at different times. Unlike the inspiration art, this one doesn't give anything away about the story climax, so I prefer it as the cover. Not to say I don't love both artworks, of course.
