Wholesome Rage: Scarlet crossover · 1:52pm Nov 7th, 2018
So I've been sick.
Very, very sick.
As a result, I've gotten some friends to fill in my slack for a few weeks while I catch up on life and work. This week, I got Scarlet to talk about Magic and vampires.
I, for one, wholeheartedly approve of this collaboration.
Maaaaaagiiiic!
I'm one of those dirty Selesnya players, by the way. Sorry, vamps, but the tree-hugging hippies are here to take over your space!
I have one minor disagreement with the article, although I am not sure where to place it. (Here or on the actual Blog)
Blue/Black Faries wasn't the last tribal deck to be standard playable and see Pro-tour play. During the Shadows over Innistrad block, Bant Spirits was Tempo decks that did see ProTour Play and made it to the round of 8 in World Championships 2016.
http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=13497 (Seth Manfield article on his pro-tour deck)
And before that, Esper Spirits made it to the Round of 8 in 2012 after Innistrad block in a deck made by Jon Finkel.
These decks however does share a LOT with Faries. Like Faries it plays largely at Instant speed due to its use of Flash.
Like Faries, this deck has a large supply of flying creatures, so when the player does swing, you have less options to block.
And Like Faries, the cards often do other things when they Flash in, allowing you to make a Tempo deck based on Synergy.
These two decks (especially the first one) laid the foundation of Bant and Azorius Spirits in Modern which are MOSTLY cards from the Shadows over Innistrad block. The core 24 cards that define these two Spirit decks until recently were 20 Spirit cards from SoI (with Magic2019's release of Supreme Phantom lowered this to 16).
((Technically Bant Humans is also a thing, but I dislike humans Tribal, so lets not talk about that))
Otherwise a very good article. I love playing Tribal, but I readily accept its rarely going to see ProTour Play, and its NEVER going to dominate a ProTour again like Fairies did.
Because lets be clear.....Bitterblossom was a broken card in its day. Thats why Tribal Faries was a thing in Standard.
God-tier.
