Moth Plays Rogue Galaxy: Hunter's Log 0004 (Juraika) · 12:10am Jun 24th, 2018

The landing party meets a number of colorful characters and faces great danger as they trek through the jungle in search of Burkaqua Village.

So a lot happens in this episode, but the three most important things are as follows:

1. The minigame/sidequest Insectron makes its debut, or at least, the bug catching/collecting aspect of it. The actual Insectron tournaments aren't available until quite a bit later. Rest assured I'll be giving Insectron its due coverage in time, but for now I'm focused on moving things along.

2. A new party member, Lilika, is introduced. Lilika is voiced by another prolific anime and cartoon VO, Kari Wahlgren. It's interesting to note that the game spoils her status as a permanent party member by adding her equipment to your inventory long before she actually joins the party.

3. We meet Toady, the talking frog who IS the game's weapon synthesis system. By swallowing two compatible weapons, Toady can spit out a stronger weapon.

Along the way, we meet another creepy jungle hermit, fight far more RG Mimics than I'd honestly have cared to encounter, battle a disgusting, slimy tentacle frog boss monster, and...unlock this game's pathetic limit break system.

Burning Strikes are a HUGE fuck-you from Level-5, and completely miss the point of Limit Breaks.

The point of Limit Breaks isn't to waste them fighting schlubs. It's to save them up to wail on bosses.

Guess what? YOU CAN'T USE BURNING STRIKES IN BOSS BATTLES.

I mean, what's even the POINT.

Anyway, next time we'll be setting some insect traps and moving the story along.

I now notice a major difference in our play styles.
Once I learned that weapons built up skill - and then stats - by using them in battle, I'd be getting into random battles as soon as I got new weapons as close to a telepad as possible, and then not progress until I'd finished.
...I'd also do that at any save point near a shop until I'd cleared the shopkeeper out of any limited quantity stackable item he sold, and had 50 healing potions in inventory.

So how do you like the surprisingly religious game?

Well, you're forgetting that I'm doing a video recording of this as I play, meaning I'm not actually doing any grinding per se. But yeah, most of my "grinding" in RG, as I recall, was ENTIRELY for monster hunts and weapon synthesis. And likely will be this time as well.

Also, keep in mind I haven't touched this game since about 2010. I'm having to remember everything as I go.

Ah, so if you weren't doing an LP you'd be just as grindy?

Eh...it depends. I'm not a huge fan of grinding. I do it when absolutely necessary.
