    The Bean is loose!

Okay. Somebody left the front gate open, and Baked Bean has gotten out and wandered off again.

If you happen to spot him, do not approach, do not get him wet, do not expose to direct sunlight, and whatever you do, don't feed him after midnight. (It makes him gassy.)

    Follow up to Bleh

    Modmyths asks:

Have you thought about starting up a Go Fund Me for it?

(It being my broken water line, just to be clear.)

The answer is no, I hadn't thought of that.

    But!

I went out and got more bids, and found a general contractor who could do the job for 3k.

    A Correction

It has come to the attention of management that a typographical error has occurred in chapter 13 of New Noses Know.

Specifically, the name of the thestral being interviewed by Garbanzo and Lima Bean. The story egregiously listed her name as Short Shift.

    Her name is Night Shift.

This wonderful little bit of advice comes from Dr Blankflank, and while it may be a bit familiar, it's still something to consider.

https://www.fimfiction.net/blog/810799/on-writing-and-knowledge

Now let me lay out why I like what he says. If I had stuck to writing what I know, No Nose Knows would never exist. I didn't know a thing about romance and comedy (I can count all the rom-coms I've watched on one hand and have plenty of leftover fingers), so it was an unknown undertaking when I hit that publish button and waited to see what would happen. I had the basic plot in mind, but not much else, and I've given google a workout while I've gone along.

And then Moon Fire, Georg, Sipioc, and DQuirks stepped up as editors and I really got an education on what I don't know. :)

So don't be afraid of writing about something you're unfamiliar with. Follow Dr Blankflank's advice, and be a bit daring. You never know what you might create - and more importantly, what you might learn - when you do so.

Your fame for your stories will draw many people to the link

That’s nice. Very cool!

Makes me want to dust off more than one story sitting on the shelf.

Good! Then there can be many writers even more awesome than I could ever be! :yay::yay:

I have no idea who this person is, so why should I care?

You shouldn't, if you're expecting random internet strangers to act as a filter for whatever ideas you deem acceptable. I don't know who Brandon Sanderson, Larry Correia, Robert Jordan, or Max Florschutz really are, but I'll be damned if I don't enjoy their stories, anyway. Considering the overwhelming glut of information we're all subjected to on a daily basis, your reaction isn't all that surprising. Ultimately, though, the only person who can rationalize how you spend your time is you.

Stop passing the buck here, bro.

YOUR LINKED BLOG POST SUCKS AND DOESN'T USE NEARLY ENOUGH PRETTY WORDS, THEREFORE I HATE YOU.

I am super jelly about how succinct Dr. Blankflank was about it, though. Super cool shift in tone between paragraphs that really hammered his/her/its/ALIENS' point home.

You don't have to care. For those who would like to read a blog that I found interesting, they are more than welcome to. If you are not interested, then you're not interested and that is totally fine.

I don't mind if you hate me, my blog posts do tend to stink. But if you liked Dr Blankflank's blog, then at least I have pointed you to something that is far superior to my own inadequate words. :yay::yay:

Passing the buck? This person is said to be giving advice, but I know nothing of him. How am I to know whether his advice is good or not? Is he an author of some repute in the fandom or even in legitimate publishing? Is he a man of years and experience or a young idealist not yet tested by time? Is he at least a good editor who might not be all that good at creating but certainly knows good things when he sees them?

No one should just mindlessly listen or dismiss someone without finding out information about the person. That is not "passing the buck", and you are a condescending idiot if you think that. No one asked you to intervene, I posted this to Irrespective's blog, it was for him to answer, and for you to come in here and sneer at me for daring to ask a question, well, that says all kinds of things about who you are, now doesn't it?

4861957
Yeah, but the blog post doesn't really mean much without the context of who the person is or where they're getting their information to write. I've read all kinds of things in my life that seem interesting, but when you find out that the person is a known liar, or hoaxer, or drew upon false research that they didn't bother to check is true, well, you end up feeling stupid. I simply wanted to know why this person should be listened to; what experience does he have in writing, or editing, or anything related, is he old and experience or a young fool full of himself, etc, et al.

Ah. My apologies then, I misunderstood.

(On an unrelated note, I once heard that those who can't detect sarcasm in others are more likely to develop some form of dementia later in life. Based on that, I'm going to have issues in the future. I'm terrible about reading any emotion properly in real life, let alone on this interweb thing.)

According to his own bio, Dr Blankflank is an English professor, but beyond that, I know nothing about him or her. I share his or her blog because I like the sentiment and the thought, and I hope it might inspire others to either take up writing or to help them improve it. It gave me pause and made me think about some story ideas I have that I'm reluctant to write due to not knowing a thing about the subject matter, and that there maybe is a way to bring them to life, if I can do the proper research into it.

So yeah. Hopefully that helps a bit, and my apologies again. One day I shall figure out how to write what I really mean to say. :facehoof:

How am I to know whether his advice is good or not?

By reading his post, using critical thinking, and coming to your own conclusions. His background is completely irrelevant (and relying on it would be a fallacious appeal to authority), because advice that you may not find helpful may very well be the last piece of the puzzle for other aspiring writers.
