My Thoughts on School Daze (Season 8 Premier) · 4:42pm Mar 24th, 2018
Note: I try to avoid too many spoilers, but just to be on the safe side, I'm putting a page break here.
I really, really, really enjoyed this episode! All the new characters were great!
To give a brief idea of the story, I'll just say the following. It takes place almost right after the events of the movie, which was cool (references to the Storm King and Tempest are a thing) and it basically follows Twilight as she tries to open a school for all species. But, of course, she runs into some big challenges with the Equestrian Education Board. Anyhow, some cool stuff happens and we get an introduction to some great new characters.
Speaking of that, we get some awesome new characters to follow around. You've got an emo/surfer pony, a shy changeling, a moody dragon, a clumsy yak, a rebellious griffon and an adorable hippogriff. I cannot wait to see these characters develop throughout the rest of the season. My personal favorite was Silverstream the hippogriff and Sandbar the pony. I really need to write a story with those two because it would be so much fun.
Anyway, it was really fun, had some great humor and some adorable moments between the characters (Twilight moping in a pillow fort was top tier). It does have a few drawbacks such as a predictable outcome and such, but that's to be expected for the most part.

Silverstream is basically a Skystar clone. I think she's gonna be this group's Pinkie Pie. But you know what? I'm down. I thought we'd have each of the characters have similar traits to one of the Mane 6 to balance like the Pillars and the Mane 6, but clearly not. We have two RDs, and Twilight and Fluttershy in one character. Speaking of which, Ocellus is totally my favorite of this group.
And since she was mentioned by name, I'm waiting for Tempest to come back as a guest teacher after she's done spreading the word.
Also... can someone please tell me if Smolder is a girl or not? Pretty sure she is, which gives us two boys in the group—a welcome change from an all-girl starring cast—though I was kind of hoping for an even 3-3 balance. But eh, two is better than none.

Thought so. I do like the fact that we don't have both of the boys being aggressive. One in that spectrum and the other being just kinda chill is a good balance.
The EEA is awesome!
I also like how they are mostly made of unicorns and that the room they were all in was dark.
The EEA can be used as a very dark organization in how they were shown in the first episode.

Well Maurice LaMarche, the voice of Neighsay, did tweet that the character would be back at some point.
FYI he's also the voice of the Brain and the Great Wakkorotti. If you don't know who they are you're likely younger than 20.

I was seriously starting to get bored of the main six. I'm really digging these new characters, especially Smolder and Gallus.
I'm pretty sure Sandbar isn't emo, he'd be dour and wearing a lot more black. He's way chill most of the time.
Ocellus is just so fuckin pweacious. Yona and Silverstream are super adorable. Smolder is new favorite tsundere dragon.
We have rad surfer dude, Chad griffin, shapeshift-shy, adhd, the clumsy yak and my personal fav: tsundere drag. I like the new characters and am looking forward to the cute shipping potential (spike x smolder anyone? I think smoke could be a good name for it.)
