Stealth site rule change · 5:50am Mar 11th, 2018

Earlier today I had an issue with a cover art I choose for a story. While dealing with that I discovered that several pics in my mature stories were gone. in fact you can't upload any NSFW images anymore despite being in a mature rated story. Now what really bugs be about that is not only the only way for people to even seen mature stories is if they have the mature setting on. BUT this sight easily allows clear incest stories but nude pics of anthro versions of known 18 year characters is a no no. WHat the hell. And when was this changed announced? Had no issue with those pics before. and as much as I disagree with the Story approver who took my cover art down at least he told me he did it.

This is to the staff. WORK ON YOUR BUCKING COMMUNICATION WITH THE WRITERS HERE! Also undo what ever you did to the image guidlines. you already have enough to prevent kids from seeing them.

Does that little box at the bottom of the site not mean anything any more?

Wow.... this site realy needs to communicate better when they change something.

irony. I can't post a nude anthro pic in the author's note's. BUT the image that was the coverart that was pulled. I could ut that in the notes

sounds like the PG notzies are working OT and are getting board.

You still here? Cause I'm seeing the ever feared line of death on your name

I believe the rule was changed a couple months ago. Site blog post and everything.

oh no, the line of death. that aint good.

"I believe the rule was changed a couple months ago. Site blog post and everything."

More like a few years ago, now. Heck, I think the policy changed before I even got my staff tag when nsfw artwork was no longer permissible on the site.

4814945
Yet I have seen covert art more sexualized then my choice for cover art. And again this sight allows incest stories so the ad excuse is poor.

4815279
Bull crap. and unfair to the extreme. Then maybe they should seek a new add partner for other story sights have no such limitation.

4815283
other's seem to do fine. and Hell I tried appealing the ban. No response from Knightly at all. so what's the point of appealing. I think changes need to made with this sites staff.

4815287
yes it does when we have clear double standard and from sight's very similar to this one.

4815290
yes it is double standard when I again several in fact 54 pages of incest content on this site. and some of those other sites. been around far longer then FIMFiction.

I'll tell you the same thing I tell the people I end up having to ban from groups for not following the rules. Try reading the rules. You can't claim ignorance when the link is sitting right there in the navigation bar.

4815297
Yeah. If anything, the "double standard" is entirely on adsense's shoulders.
Fimfic's staff are merely complying with their overlords.

4815299
then again maybe they should look else where for adds. I do Furaffintiy and Sofurry. they run ads and are not so limited.

4815301
I know exactly what it means.

Did all the work I'd considered doing, but didn't since I was on the road at the time. I knew coverart at one point did allow some form of more questionable content that we now consider to be nsfw (I distinctly recall Meeester having to go through some 100k stories to purge coverart) but yeah, things do indeed change. Just far longer back than I thought!

As for 4815275 it doesn't really matter. You had blatantly visible outlines of nipples and such present on your coverart, which we consider to be nsfw in nature. Stuff can be suggestive/sexualized and not be nsfw underneath our rules, but outlines / visible sexual bits, juices, etc falls underneath the big fat no. Incest as a topic isn't really a valid counter-argument here, as it is a content that has nothing to do with artwork. Words =/= images, and the incestuous images used for coverart may be suggestive, but they do not cross the line. In short outlines or bare sexual bits/organs/juices are a no go. Suggestive content that doesn't display a sexual act is generally okay.

And AdSense as a reason for not allowing something is a very valid reason for drawing a line as to what is / is not nsfw, since without it, you can probably kiss the site goodbye. It costs money to host a website, and with the traffic/data associated with fimfiction, ads are needed to ensure it continues to exist. So, ensuring the site complies with Google's policy is pretty important.

4815311
then get another source for it is bull crap. and note my latest blog I show a story with a much more suggestive pic then my coverart.

'Get another source' - For what, precisely?

As for the image you are linking, while yes, it can be suggestive in nature...
- Lacks any obvious signs of sexual acts
- Lacks any signs of sexual organs
- Lacks any signs of sexual fluids
- And it could easily be seen as the two sleeping.

That may be suggestive, but suggestive does not mean it is immediately nsfw in nature.

4815313

For ads if that is such a concern.
yet that was the reason my was removed. and not the authro's notes. where I move the art to since. MY readers wanted to see it and note your site's program allowed it. So it was clearly acceptable.

4815308
while unable to fine Deviantart's numbers. Sofurry is just short of 500K while Furaffinty is really close to FIM's numbers yet they have a strong ad and not have the censors Adsence has.

You've obviously never looked at other alternatives for advertisement on a site. They don't exist. I mean, sure, there is your Furaffinity / Sofurry approach, but that's all 18+ advertisement by users for users, pretty much, and dirt cheap on top of it. And those sites have far larger userbases than what fimfiction has. It simply would not work. So, AdSense is the sole choice for advertisement, and thus we follow and respect their policies, for good reason.

As for moving your artwork to the author's notes... if it was removed as a cover, what would possess you to think it would be fine to put it there? Seriously? What thought process existed that told you "Oh hey, mods on the site said I couldn't use this artwork for my cover, but it is okay to post here" would be a good idea? Our rules are clearly stated on nsfw artwork, and that it is not allowed on the site. There is no wiggle room, there is no 'Let us post it here instead!'

Just because a site allows for a user to do something doesn't mean you should do it. The whole point of sites is to allow people from all over the world to be able to utilize the contents of it easily and without hassle. I'm not even aware of program(s) or programming that could even attempt to detect images that could be nsfw in nature, and even if there were? It'd probably return more false positives than actual positives. It's up to the users to use their brain, read the rules, and understand what is / is not acceptable behavior. When staff has to tell you something is not acceptable, then that means that hey, maybe there's something to it. Not to go around their back as if we won't notice it.

Nsfw artwork, stories that don't meet thresholds of acceptable standards, trying to circumvent blocks via alts or posting in areas the blocks do not cover... all of this people can do, yes, but it's in the rules to not do. And as such, we will act upon them when we find them, or they are reported. A site's programming cannot be blamed, all of said behavior is on the users to read and understand the site rules, and to follow them.

4815323
Furaffinity has about the same numbers as you. So my point stands.

FurAffinity has approximately ten times the users online at any given point than fimfiction does. It's pretty easy to determine, as both sites list the stats on the bottom of a loaded page. Fimfiction utilizes a very small number of advertisements per page (2-3) via AdSense. Furaffinity uses between 6 and 12 advertisements per page. Those advertisements they run rely on users to purchase to run the site. It is not the same, not in terms of userbase, nor in terms of income.

Please at least attempt to do some research before you come out swinging with statistics to try and back up your flawed logic. The rules have been present and readily visible for pretty much the entirety of the time this site has existed, and these rules you are chaffing under have been present since 2013 and 2014. There's zero reason for you to be throwing a tantrum like you are over it.

4815334
I did do some research and guess what. one of ther ad providers is google plus some others. and you are actually well ahead in registered users. so try again.

And when was this changed announced?

Years ago. Years and years. I want to say 2013 or 2014.

This wasn't stealthy, you're just not paying attention.

4814619
Try several years.

4814140
They did. there was a site blog and everyone's NSFW blog posts got deleted.

4815344
Google AdSense pulled their ads from Fimfic over the issue. I don't care what FurAffinity's got going on, that happened.

And FurAffinity in 2012 claimed to have nearly 750,000 accounts. You're looking at registration numbers for their forums.

4815344
That argument has several problems. The first of which can be summed up by "Ad providers don't care about the number of accounts on the site, they only care about the number of page views the site generates at any given moment."

The number of registered accounts has nothing to do with how much money a site makes. Ad companies only want one thing: to get eyes on their advertisements. The only way they can measure that is by having the servers of a site they're running on count how many times a page is loaded, and assume that for each of those, a fresh batch of ads are viewed.

This means that ad revenue is directly linked to the raw number of times the website generates a new page for a user.

The number of accounts might have a slight correlation with the number of people casually browsing it, but you don't need to have an account to view most of the content, and many accounts do not generate massive amounts of pages loaded. I could go through my followers list and find dozens of accounts that haven't been used in years. How many pages do you think these accounts view on a daily basis? How much money do you think that makes for fimfic?

Furaffinity is an image hosting site. Images can be viewed in seconds, allowing a user to move on to the next, and so load dozens of pages every minute. Each image viewed is a little bit of money for FA.

Fimfiction is a writing and reading site. Reading a chapter takes significantly more time than viewing an image; Most users will load a page once and spend several minutes on that one page before moving on.

Even with the same number of registered users, and using the exact same ad provider, fimfiction would make significantly less money than furaffinity, simply from the mechanics of how ad providers and user behavior interact. This is not even a contest; Fimfiction could be paid ten times what FA gets for a single pageview and it probably wouldn't even be enough to match FA's income.

The idea that fimfic could just switch over to Fa's ad system and not immediately lose 90% of the money that keeps it afloat is downright laughable.

4815512
But furaffinity is far more then just images.there are a lot of stories on that site as well

4815543
The vast majority of their content is still quickly-viewed images that can be reached with google searches in a matter of seconds, and seen without an account.
FA probably gets 99% of their money from this, all coming from a mix of unregistered users and registered ones going on massive viewing binges.

The literature is a tiny, inconsequential drop of water in the ocean of their revenue, for the same reasons I outlined above. The stories don't make their money, they just benefit from the infrastructure paid for by the images.

Your point is that fimfic would be fine with that tiny drop of water; I disagree.

4815550
and that is something we can disagree on.

4815972
trashy, most of my stories have more thumbs up then down. and it's the principle.
