A new project, and an explanation!

    Hey folks,

Alternate title for this blog post: I'm Doing a Thing (and I'm looking for help)

I don't think anyone is surprised that my pony writing has been on a bit of a hiatus for a while, and my presence on this site is mostly to lurk-and-read rather than finish my long-delayed stories. What you might not know, though, is what I've been doing instead of pony writing.

FiM Short Story contest about to start! · 9:55am Nov 30th, 2017

It's been a while since plugged one of these, but The Writeoff is about to host another pony Short Story round. Stories must be 2,000-8,000 words in length, set in the FiM universe, and somehow relate to a prompt that will be posted in exactly 26 hours. You'll have 72 hours to write your masterpiece, and then the best part begins!

What's the best part, you ask? The best part is getting feedback on your story! Fun fact: the best way to improve as a writer is to 1) write, and 2) get feedback on your writing. This contest lets you do both in the space of just a few days!

So head over to The Writeoff site, spin up an account, and join in the fun!

I'm not burned out yet. I think there's a few sparks leftover. We'll see what kind of fire results.

Okay, I like the prompts I'm seeing on the voting list.

I'm in.

How does this work? Is the prompt decided once voting concludes? Or do we choose a prompt and go?

The former. You write a story based on the winning prompt, and submit it to the site “anonymously” (log in to the site under the name you’d like to use, but make sure nobody knows the story’s yours and don’t put your name in it). It will strip your info out while voting is going on and present all the stories in an anonymous pool.

The hardest part is always withholding your responses to other people’s critiques until after you’ve been de-anonymized at the end, but it’s a good sort of hard - it lets you see people trying to puzzle out your intentions for the story in the absence of immediate author’s notes, and lets you take an honest look at what you actually communicated with the text standing alone. That’s something you don’t often get here and can be a powerful aid in helping you write more clearly.

Hope to see you there, and don’t be afraid to ask more questions, here or there!

That's awesome, or n'ts awesome?
That's a question :rainbowderp:

What time does this finish again?

Exactly 12 hours and 20 minutes from now.

Right. Hopefully I can get this finished!
