Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Scribbler has done a reading of ShadowOfCygnus's Cold Light, with Goombasa and Luna Farrowe!

I've really been on the ball this month! :O This one's short, because two of the audiobooks were pretty long, but things are going well regardless. Got a milestone in this blog, multi-parter coming up in a few and a vs. post likely tomorrow... Stay tuned!

Review #4600/700th Review of 2017!
Genre: Dark Comedy
Twilight has turned herself undead again. Nothing her friends can't help fix!
Why did Obs have to leave us, why? ;_; He was the best, and this story is the best. Oh my god. If you're not laughing by the third sentence, there is something wrong with you. Both Twilight and the narrative traipse along, happy-go-lucky, as the former literally falls to pieces. Most everypony else is rather blase about the whole thing. It's hysterical, no joke drops without a laugh, and it ends on a rather unusual explanation for something that happened in the show. This is just a treat, go read it!

And of course she's going to test it.
So this story comes in three parts. The first scene is hilarious, and would have made a great one-shot naughty comedy had it ended on Twilight deciding to test out her purchase. The second part, then, is the robo-sex, which is surprisingly well written (if you ignore the cervical poking <.<). That said, the comedy completely drains out of the story once Twilight starts into the deed. Then there's the epilogue, which is a little amusing, but mostly just there. It doesn't enhance the story in any way and very much feels like an afterthought. Still, if you like sexy funny times, the first scene up to the activation of the robot is totally worth it.

This is Winged T. Spears's companion. Gonna give him a yea. He's a tad mumbly, but he came through all right. Good use and non-use of sound effects, too. Though he hasn't done anything in a year, so this may be a dead channel...
Genre: 2P Romance
A mishap in the woods bring a big change to your life.
The problem with this story is that it's pretty well written, but I was not the least bit interested in what was going on. As second-person wish-fulfillment fics go, it's entirely standard. As shipfics go, it's… well, almost entirely standard, save for the part where you do something stupid to try and impress Fluttershy and she chastises you for it. But this isn't going to interest anyone who isn't already invested in the concept. It's the kind of story where you can look at the description and tags and know "you" will end up with Fluttershy by the end, and therefore know whether or not you want to read it. I guess you could do far worse in that regard, at least.

A Knight for Dusk by Cloplight Clopple
Reading by Winged T. Spears
Mature: Sex
Genre: M/M Clop/Gayngst
It's a shame that this is what we're reduced to to get gay romance or sex on this site. This is one of those stories where A) everything's the same, except Twilight is a guy, and B) a character questions their sexuality in ways that are true to life but make zero sense in the setting. And it's maybe dumb to demand adherence to tone in a fic with R63 thrown in, but I certainly had a hard time reconciling Dusk's internalized heteronormativity and had to wonder just what kind of life he'd led that he thought stallions had to like mares to be "normal". There are other problems with it, too, mainly the constant POV shifting to the guard. (Maybe it's also dumb to demand POV stay constant in a clopfic, it happens so often. :|) This might have merit as help for a young man wrestling with his sexuality, but then again it also presents a "you will cry into the arms of someone who is gay and also into you and then have sex and everything will be fine" fantasy scenario that is probably less helpful. I dunno, it's a mess.

"Special" Delivery by horizon
Genre: Comedy
It's time for Twilight to have the drug talk with Spike.
Trust horizon to turn a drug comedy into something that connected with me in an unexpected way. Don't get me wrong, this is mostly about Twilight freaking out over very well-crafted in-universe drugs, but until she finally understands the full breadth of what's going on, it's really a story about being left out. I've been in situations before where it seems like everyone around me is talking about something, especially drugs, that I have no interest or experience with. When Twilight gets into that situation in the story, I identified with her so hard. That's not to say there's nothing here for you if you're not likely to make that connection yourself; in fact, you might get more out of this if you're into pot! (Maybe even on it…) It's well written and has a great running gag, so don't pass it by. :)

"Abracadaver"
Really great narration here. Consistently funny, if perhaps front (and maybe back) loaded. Actually a better, more sensical version of MMC. What do you call something that's both a crackfic and a successful fix-fic, anyway?

"Clopbot" was likewise hilarious. The story's structure/genre didn't lend itself to any kind of continuous comedic build, but there was some humorous stuff throughout. Though I couldn't help thinking for a lot of it they shouldn't allow returns if the packaging has been opened, possibly even at all. 0_0 Also, I have trouble understanding how a voice can be both emotionless and sultry. But on the whole, really funny during the main funny parts, and the rest is solid too.

And, of course, Horizon delivers the good stuff. :P
