When Illustration gets weird: "Why does Turing Test have tentacles?" · 7:31pm Aug 11th, 2017

I've got an unused sketch from a recent chapter and a story to share. This is the sketch, and yes, I can explain...

First, let me say that when I saw this I laughed my ass off, and it might get a colorized version later, so I am in no way disappointed with this.

So why is Turing a squid when in the chapter it's Gadget? The short answer is that sometimes Green and I have communication issues, and it's usually pretty hilarious.

Longer version is that Green tends to read things too quickly and miss details. Of course, I can't rag on him too hard because my drawing skills are way worse than his literacy skills, which means if I did any drawings for this story, they would be done in colored pencil or on MS Paint. But anyway, here's the original commission description:

"Discord standing next to Gadget, having just snapped his fingers. He’s turned her mechanical arms into four wiggly purple octopus tentacles. Discord’s expression should be mischievous and smug while Gadget should look horrified and revolted."

So, when the sketch above popped up and after aforementioned laughing off of my ass, we had this conversation:

  • Me: "That's great, but, uh... why does Turing have tentacles?"
  • Green: "Huh? The commission said Turing had tentacles while Gadget looked horrified."
  • Me: "I... I'm pretty sure I specified Gadget had the tentacles."
  • Green: "..."
  • Me: "Let's check the commission again."
  • Green: (re-reads the commission) "F:flutterrage:K!"

On the upside, we both agreed that we loved the sketch anyway and that I'd pay Green for it. This isn't the first time we've had a kerfuffle like this, but this is by far the strangest breakdown of communication we've had in the last few years of working together.

Here's what the finished illustration in the chapter looked like, just in case you wanted a reminder.

I hope you've enjoyed this look behind the scenes and we hope to see you for funsies later today! Thanks for letting me share a story about my favorite mistake!

We could totally see Discord offering another experience for Turing.
