Twilight gets an awkward reaction from the residents of Ponyville on her return. Spike’s larger size, Pinkie’s changeling wing and horn contraptions, as well as her own glowing changeling accessories may be to blame. The hive group eats at Twilight’s favorite restaurant.

Chrysalis and Fluttershy make their way towards the Tree of Harmony to ensure the way is clear. They see the Tree and Twilight assures they will join them shortly. Applejack is first to join them at the Tree of Harmony.

Twilight talks with the Tree via the hivemind. It refers to her as the Queen of War.

Twilight talks to the Tree of Harmony and it reveals that, though the title Queen of War may have been a joke, there are future events for Equestria under its Queen that are not uplifting. The Tree takes its Elements back. The necklaces and crown transform back into jewels and return to the branches. It is revealed that the Power of Harmony still remains with the group, however.

The Tree shows Twilight and her group the Temple of the Vine via the hivemind. Pinkie fixes her horn, which can now shoot changeling energy. Chrysalis had considered finding a way to make Twilight’s friends immortal for her sake but Twilight is now becoming too aware of the Vine and its abilitites for that to be a secret. Spike also desires for Rarity's immortality, pressuring Twilight into attempting it. The purple alicorn worries over the idea of losing her friends to old age.

The Tree speaks to the Vine about their show they put on for Twilight. The Tree wants the entire pony hive to be present before the Vine, who doubts it will happen. Both were aware that Sombra had been spying on the gathering around the Tree. The Vine reveals it leaked a fake prophecy to Sombra about the princess and the horizon, but it is ironically coming true.

Twilight feels down the next day because of the mortality issues. The others attempt cheering her up and Chrysalis has some success.

Twilight begins to read Luna’s book on Spike. It gives some ideas for future growth but embarrasses the dragon. Twilight suggests they test some of their new powers, which Rainbow Dash is excited about. The alicorn gets a tad carried away with testing her magical strength and apologizes to Ponyville for scaring them.

The hive group has an array of desserts together at Sugar Cube Corner. Fluttershy is saddened by the lack of time she has to spend with Twilight in comparison to Chrysalis and Rainbow Dash. Twilight takes her aside to talk one-on-one. The purple mare decides they should test and practice Fluttershy’s Hive Power as a means of doing something special together.

Rarity comforts Spike’s power pains as he helps her work. Applejack distracts Pinkie while the others explore their Hive Powers. Fluttershy tries her power and discovers she can materialize fantasy spaces in the real world – like recreating their hivemind dreamscape in real space.

Twilight sees if she can use Fluttershy’s power via their hive connection but the changed space turns into a dark gloomy space reminiscent of the Crystal Empire under Sombra. A large dark creature appears that looks half-scorpian half-pony. A battle with the scorpony commences.

Spike and Rarity show up to help. The dragon is resilient but gets knocked back. Rarity used her Hive Power to shield against the scorpony’s attacks. Applejack and Pinkie Pie show up as well. The farm pony attempts to use her Hive Power, which is void magic. It fails to hold the enemy, though. Eventually Fluttershy is able to defeat the creature with her Hive Power by dumping the creature in a deep pond she materializes. The scorpony gets out but gives up as well.

It turns out that Discord had been involved in putting on the fake attack and the scorpony was simply Chrysalis. The point was to test their Hive Powers. However, Twilight wonders about the dark look of the sphere-space, which Fluttershy hadn’t changed and none of the others had either. It may have been Sombra, who was earlier shadowing them near the Tree of Harmony.

Cadance assures her husband that Spike will be a smooth replacement for them. They prepare for their public announcement. Meanwhile, Twilight has a talk with Discord about his intentions. Discord says he is only concerned for her frame of mind when she rules Equestria and is aware of her struggle over her own power. Twilight, however, believes she is capable of leading Equestria.

Nearly a week passes. Centurtion recovers and addresses the royal sisters before returning to Twilight. He takes issue with the pending appointment of a new Captain of the Guard named Storm Sword. Political maneuvering regarding the position is known to the sisters, who chose Storm Sword based on merit and an exemplary record in spite of manufactured smears.

Twilight corresponds with Princess Celestia over her upcoming coronation as queen as well as the appointment of Storm Sword. It becomes clear there is a growing rift between Cloudsdale and Canterlot. Twilight does her best to plan for each situation but is suspicious that there is a plot she is unaware of.

Twilight Sparkle arrives back at Canterlot Castle and meets Storm Sword. The to-be-appointed Captain of the Guard shows Twilight a map of support and opposition in Canterlot and they talk about the political situation she is stepping into. Two ponies, Blue Moon and North Star, look to be strong allies in the city that Twilight will be able to count on.

Meanwhile in Cloudsdale, major protests are in motion over new airspace restrictions from Canterlot. North Star arrives to offer a plan to help. It succeeds and the new airspace law is repealed. Luna takes North Star and Spitfire back to the castle gardens where they rendezvous with Twilight’s group. North Star speaks to Twilight about what they might do after the coronation.

Twilight and the royal princesses prepare for the coronation as the crowds gather in Canterlot. The ceremony plays out smoothly and the only trouble caused is handled by the Royal Guard. Twilight is officially crowned Queen of Equestria.

Later, the royal sisters are alone to relax in the castle garden. They are joined by Discord, who questions their past. Luna lets Celestia explain their origins and Discord opens his heart to them.

When Twilight falls asleep that night, she feels peaceful at last.

Celestia and Luna set out on their journey with their full armor. Discord accompanies them. Twilight gives her final goodbye to Celestia, which is hard for the both of them. Fluttershy gives a tearful farewell to Discord as well.

Days pass. Twilight talks to Applejack about her Hive Power at Canterlot Castle. Then, Pinkie Pie enjoys her flight above Canterlot while Twilight concludes some management with Storm Sword over infighting. Rainbow Dash bakes some rainbow cookies for Twilight.

Chrysalis builds a hivemind transmitter relay near Neighagra Falls to keep a strong signal to the Crystal Empire, where Spike and Rarity will soon be.

Twilight uses her legal powers granted to her by Celestia during a court session gone wrong. The Elite party of the royal court attempts a coup within the chamber. Six Royal Guards loyal to the Elites had been stationed inside and attempt taking Twilight and her hive members with her. Twilight’s lightning power defeats them and the legislators in favor of the coup attempt to flee.

Meanwhile, outside of the court building, Royal Guards start turning. A coup signal had left the court to trigger a greater rebellion. A few rebel guards (Blue Guards) attempt to knock out Applejack, who is saved by Pinkie and her charged changeling horn.

Flash Sentry makes it to Storm Sword in front of the castle by Twilight’s orders. The loyal guards are badly outnumbered and losing. Storm decides to rush the castle to ensure the safety of Twilight’s hive members there and establish a secure grounds for operation.

Shallow Hills stirs up a crowd of citizens to assist him in taking the royal court for the Elites. However, upon arrival they see the Blue Guards are defeated there and Shallow Hills’ mob is part defeated and part dispersed.

Centurion attacks Storm Sword and Flash Sentry in the castle, revealing himself to be with the Blue Guard. Storm defeats him with knockout gas and prepares to fight more of the Blue Guard that advance on her.

Golden Chalice, one of the leaders of the Twenty Hours Coup, is captured. However, she wonders as she is captured why the cloud poison didn’t work to take down Cloudsdale before it could get involved.

Time goes by as the city recovers. Twilight leaves Centurion in jail, disappointed with his betrayal. Spike and Rarity manage the Crystal Empire in the North. Pinkie Pie snags Chrysalis to help her decrease public tension in the square.

Twilight has pains in her hivemind and struggles with emotions of hatred that resonate there. Fluttershy helps with her Hive Power to calm their queen and it seems to work. Spike wonders if Cadance is hiding something from them regarding her trip with Shining Armor. Applejack considers going back to Ponyville to be with her family there.

A dark shadowy mist creates dark crystals to infect the hivemind transmitter at Neighagra Falls. The transmissions are subtly altered to prevent Spike and Rarity from finding out about anything the shadow doesn’t want. Queen Flux and the changeling swarm are present, ready to carry out the plans of their untrusted ally.

North Star and Spitfire go to inspect a report of a cloud-eating discease in Cloudsdale’s lower levels. It turns out to be true. More and more clouds erode away, giving the city only an hour more until it loses altitude.

Twilight enjoys the fresh air with Chrysalis from a castle balcony. She then sees a single Wonderbolt racing in the sky towards her.
