Is Starlight a Mary Sue? · 11:58pm Jun 12th, 2017

I'd like to start this blog with the following disclaimer, this is purely me ranting about the fandom over Starlight and just the fandom in general. I'm not against the opinions of others I just disagree with many of them and this blog is about that. So, the internet has been once again bringing up the old tale of Starlight and how over powered she is after Royal Problems and I just wanted to vent myself about how I think this isn't true.

First off, for anyone who isn't aware of this, I do love Starlight Glimmer almost as much as I love Trixie. So why is it that I can't leave this alone? Because I find that many people in the fandom have either short memories and forget things or can't enjoy things for what they are. For example Honest Apple, I loved it. Applejack was asked by Rarity to be a judge for a fashion show and was too honest to the point she hurt other people.

With the Royal Problems episode many people went back to arguing about whether or not Starlight was overpowered or not again. Again, I'm not against anyone's opinions I just don't agree with many of them on Starlight being overpowered. Nothing she does is anything that some other pony can't or hasn't done at some point.

From the start her removal of cutie marks wasn't actually just her own magic. As we say with trying to make cutie marks appear a cutie mark will go back to it's owner if released from any magical holds, what kept the cutie marks was actually the stone slab near Starlight's old village. Her flying, Pumpkin did it. Teleportation, just another advanced spell, even Trixie can learn it apparently along with transfiguring things to tea cups. Switching cutie marks? Twilight did it with Starswirls journal and that was what made her an alicorn eventually. So, Starlight doing it isn't as far-fetched as some think since twilight did it. Time travel? Twilight did it too back in season one. The mind controlling of the mane six? All spells she learned from the library. As you can see I don't see the validity of people saying she's overpowered since there are reasons why she can do these things. So why is it that people call out Starlight Glimmer for being over powered when she does something new or over the top?

In truth I honestly think its because many people in the fandom simply forget what happened prior. I'm one of those people who remembers every episode of something to the best of my abilities so I can look at future episodes with a new light. Or in this case defend my little Starlight from being put down. So, is Starlight overpowered? I don't think so she just has magic that rivals an alicorn which has been proven time and again that they're not overly powerful beings. Yes, they're above the average ponies magical capabilities, but there is a limit to them and they're still mortal and can be hurt, they just seem to be eternal maybe immortal but they don't seem to be immortal at the same time. That's an strange argument to make depending ones point of view. That's just my opinion and was just venting my thoughts so don't take it too seriously.

Love all of you! Got a different opinion? Share it with me. I love to have these discussions.

She's close, but her 'there, I fixed everything' solutions tend to fall apart as soon as they make contact with pony nature.

She avoids being a sue by not having 'brow beat main characters' privileges, nor an invariable moral high ground, nor do her solutions always go well (and can often make things worse). And you don't feel like telling her 'SHUT UP ALREADY!' and show her what it's like to be on the receiving end of a super powered brow beating.

And her colt friend is a total geek.

I can definatley see where you're coming from at that point. Still makes me wonder. True she hasn't beaten the main characters except as a manipulator back then. Now she just like you said has a questionable moral high ground. At least that's what I think you're saying. As for her coltfriend Sunburst is a total geek. :rainbowlaugh:

I'm slow with watching new episodes since Tirek, I think I'm at the epsiode with Applejack right now. However that makes me thinking of Starswirls the bearded.

Why can that old sucker be the ultimate Unicorn in so many stories and appareantly the show itself, but Starlight that seems to get a little power boost or boost in her own confident isn't allowed to be awesome in one way or another.
There actually should be more Unicorns that can at least do half of that stuff Starswirls could do, I often felt like the power gap got to wide and Starwirls was made nearly goldlike or on an Alicorn level.

What was epsiode 9 about?, I only found that episode with a commentary and because of that the episode itself was pretty quiet.

You have a really focused vision, I could actually understood that part with the dark looking Mare and I enjoyed it :pinkiehappy:

I got the feeling it was about her learning not to take her honesty to far, but I stop here, because that is not the point of your blog. I come back if I have watched the episode or share some thoughts on that matter.

edit: I''m not sure if episode 10 is going to be a strange one or not, I saw the NIghtmare Celestia stuff is real.

4569487 But her mare friend is hot!

Trixie or Maud? :raritywink: We all know she's got it hard for Trixie, but Muad might be Trixie's close competition.

Inky Rose is best pegasus now. Most cute pegasus too. Not that south valley girl pone. I went to school with people like that and I hate it. I recently found out that many countries think we Americans actually talk like that. "Literally" "Like, I can't even" or "Whateves"

A lot of people hated episode 9 Honest Apple. I liked it a lot. Like you it was nice to see Applejack take honesty too far. I personally thin k Starlight's spell from way back messed up her head and that's why she did what she did. :raritywink:

To be fair, the "I've come up with the perfect magic solution oh no everything got worse" method was perfected by Twilight as early as season one, and she passed it on to her student. Because it's bad storytelling if everything is fixed at the five-minute mark when you have a twenty-minute episode.

A Mary Sue would fix everything right out the gate, and then spend the rest of the episode getting praised for it.

Very true. That's one other reason to add to my list why Starlight isn't a Mary Sue. Yeah, Twilight perfected the art long ago. It is nice to see the creative ways the witters can come up with to solve problems. Even if most are unrealistic.

Well everytime I manage to convince myself to watch the episodes again I usually end up liking some like this more than every adventure episode, but I try to watch with an open mind when Celestia finally seems to get her Villain moment, I just hope it turns out better than some other stuff I could image lately. Normally I would be happy to see something like this.

so her name is Inky Rose yes? I just enjoy her and Mauds personality, I have a hard time to say who is my favourite pony, but if she would ever get more important she would probably be in the top 10.
I can better answer this question in categories.

Okay I reached episode ten and so far I can't exactly say that Starlight would be Op or something, I don't understand why people got this reaction.

It turned out better than I thought so far, the thing with both evil forms and stuff, better than Tirek for me.

The only thing I hated again, becaue no matte if it is a kids show or not, I hate it if they do that, was that Twilight needed to spy on everything but more important was for me, that there was the map thing again.

Of course the map isn't going to vanish, but I remember a talk I had with someone on a fan side when I was still active, that it was stupid for Twilight just no to go, because some map or destiny, thought it had to be that way.
I can't even name which shows it were, but I remember all the bad shows if I think of that stupid map.

I just liked it to see a far less perfect side of both princesses, we needed that far sooner in my opinion, but I guess I need more till I don't see Celestia in a certain light more than half of the time.

If she isn't a Mary Sue, after the opening of Season 7, she's the closest thing I've seen to one since the series started. Overpowered? Maybe not, but she's starting to fill the rest of the traits pretty well...
