"Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" - Nostalgia AND Mind-Boggling WTFery all rolled into one! · 1:22am Dec 20th, 2016

FXX is running the very first episode of The Simpsons, the only episode to have aired in the 1980s, right now.

After binging on episodes from the late 90s through the 2000s and 2010s during the Simpsons 600 binge, going back to where it all began (not including the Tracy Ullman Show shorts) is...well...

Weird.

I vaguely remember having actually tuned in to watch this on Fox back when it first aired (I was 12). It's probably been...at least sixteen, seventeen years since I last saw this episode? And wow, have the Simpsons changed over time. I mean, yeah, we all know the show and the characters have changed and evolved, but when you go back and watch the first episode after all this time, you don't even recognize Homer. Or Moe.

Then, too, you remember that this episode first aired 27 years ago. Those of us who were there that night...yikes. Man, I feel old. :twilightoops:

I don't think any of us could've predicted two whole generations would've grown up with The Simpsons, or that it'd still be on the air with new episodes in 2016.

Man. It really makes you think.

4347145 Yeah but that's normal with animation (and even live action TV). The first episode of Star Trek aired on TV in the 60s wasn't the first episode produced either. (And the first episode produced wasn't even the first pilot, but Star Trek is weird like that.)

And Bart Simpson is still stuck in Edna Krabappel's class. Sounds like someone's idea of Hell, but I'm not sure whose.

:pinkiehappy:

4347183 Is she still appearing in silent cameos? I thought they had largely retired her since her voice artist died.

4347145 Well, the animation being bad isn't the reason why it was delayed, at least not completely. They kept having problems as a result of the bad animation, and kept pushing it back until it aired as the final episode of the first season. Kind of makes you wonder if The Simpsons would've gotten off the ground had they aired that episode first.

4347203 If he never made it to the next grade, then he's still in her class. So, voice actress aside, I imagine Edna's somewhere in that classroom. With Bart. Until the show ends.

Rofl.

It's been all these years and I still don't understand...

Why the fuck are they yellow?

That doesn't make me feel old. What makes me feel old is the fact that I saw Star Wars (it still feels wrong to add A New Hope to it) in the theater when it first released.

4348269 OK yeah that officially makes you old. :rainbowderp: That is one of the few things anyone is likely to mention on this website that I wasn't actually born yet for--I was born five months after Star Wars first came out.
