    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Birthday Bios: Rocky Road · 4:38pm Nov 28th, 2016

Well, time for me to make the obvious joke…

I love rocky road!
So weren't you gonna buy half a gallon, baby?
I love rocky road!
So have another triple scoop with me!

Ah, brings back memories of when my brother rented a CD when I was about ten or something, and we heard this and other songs, wondering who the heck the genius making those parody songs was…

Funny, despite being the only CheesePie kid to have his name be an outright Weird Al reference, Rocky’s probably the one who participates in tomfoolery the least out of the five of them. He… takes after his grandparents.

So, shall we delve into his story?

Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich didn’t mean to have any more kids after the rough and stressful birth of their twins, Pizza Pockets and Fudge Fondue. But, a little private Hearth’s Warming party between the party pony couple led to a surprise pregnancy. While Cheese was worried about a repeat of the twins’ birth, everything went smoothly when Rocky Road was born. Cheese was unfortunately not there at Rocky’s birth and wouldn’t get to meet him for another month, but just hearing how the birth went made him relax and be open for any future foals.

Rocky Road was adored by his parents and big brother and sister, and was subject to being carried around and cuddled by either twin at any given time. Sometimes Pizza and Fudge would fight over who got to play with him if they wanted to do different activities. This tended to annoy Rocky, who was already developing a sense of sarcasm before he was even a year old.

Rocky never could quite connect with Pizza Pockets. Pizza’s more upbeat, mischievous, smart alecky personality didn’t sit well with Rocky Road’s more serious, low-key grumpiness. Pizza Pockets playing with baby Rocky Road was always awkward, mostly due to the latter’s lack of interest in the former’s favorite things. Fudge was usually more successful in making Rocky smile.

It was quite clear that he took after Pinkie’s side of the family very early on; preferring a dull and simple approach to life, possessing strength greater than any other earth pony his age, and having an interest in rocks. His super strength was typically used to carry around guests to where he wanted them to sit. Poor balance in his infancy meant he dropped ponies from time to time, and when having a tantrum, he’s broken some things, but he quickly learned how to control it from his grandparents.

He was typically happy when he’s interacting with his cousins from his mother’s side of the family, and he admired his Grandpa Igneous a lot, to the point where he’d follow him around and listen to stories about Igneous’ youth. He’d even show a hidden chirpy, excitable side similar to Mom when asking his aunts for any given geology or rock farming fact (especially Maud, the certified geologist).

On the other hoof, he was more ambivalent toward his cousins from his father’s side of the family. As a matter of fact, he didn’t get along very well with cousin Bell Pepper, and her siblings would either annoy or bore him. He’d usually swipe a book to look at or study the local geology whenever they visited Uncle Tomato. On occasion, he’d casually toss anypony who bothered him away.

When he was five, his parents had another son that they named Berry Blast. Rocky found it weird that his baby brother was a unicorn until his dad explained that there was a unicorn in his lineage. Rocky actually found it pretty cool to see that gene pop up… up until Berry had his magic surges and got into everything. One such thing was Rocky’s rock collection, which Berry ended up scattering around town by having an explosive magic spurt. Plenty of ponies ended up in the hospital, and Rocky had to restart his collection from scratch, complaining that his super strength never caused problems that bad.

He was eight when his baby sister Cheesecake Chase was born. When he saw that she was a pegasus, he immediately asked what great grandparent she got that from (Pinkie’s grandmother). While C.C. wasn’t nearly as destructive as Berry, she still caused trouble when she started using her wings. And being a pretty strong baby herself, she’s carried her siblings into the air at least once. This was not fun for Rocky, who is absolutely terrified of heights and gets airsick very easily.

His school days typically consisted of him being a loner, just doing his schoolwork or playing in the sandbox. Bullies have tried to pick on him, but he’s scared them off by crushing a rock under his hoof. You do not want to anger Rocky Road. However, there was one pony who liked to pick on him—his older brother Pizza Pockets, in the grand tradition of sibling teasing. Rocky never appreciated it, and was glad when Pizza grew out of it.

Aside from studying rocks and adding new ones to his collection, Rocky enjoyed building castles or volcanoes out of mud and rocks or sand, reading things from science books to Daring Do books to comics about Western hero Al Ammo, eating ice cream (because after all, rocky road is a kind of ice cream), and carving things out of rocks and wood. Sometimes his carvings would be used for his parents’ parties as decoration, so that he didn’t feel left out of the party planning. Cheese even keeps a couple on his person when he travels.

He didn’t like to admit it, but like his siblings, he possessed a “Daddy Sense” that told him when his father returned home from travels. He didn’t quite think a serious pony like him should have a silly sense like that. Of course, Pinkie figured out his shame, and told him that it was okay, it runs in the family and doesn’t discriminate between silly and serious. After all, Pinkie’s sisters have their own senses too!

“Cheese, does your brother have a ‘Tommy Sense’?”

“If he does, he doesn’t talk about it.”

To absolutely nopony’s surprise, Rocky Road’s cutie mark turned out to be a rock. He earned it during a class field trip, when he moved a boulder off of a nature trail. When he showed his family, Pinkie remarked that there was a shape of a balloon in the rock, and started to wonder if her cutie mark would have looked like that (times three, with one being brown) if she had been a rock farmer instead of a party pony.

When finishing his Ponyville schooling as a teen, he wanted to live with his grandparents and aunts in Nickerlite, as he felt he was suited for the simple job of rock farming. All his parents asked of him is that he keep in touch and visit every so often, to which he replied, “Nickerlite’s not that far away.”

So, he’d spend the next several years working on that farm, which was a piece of cake for him. Breaking rocks, hauling rocks, sorting rocks, making sure the mine and quarry was sound, and just spending time with his rock farmer cousins was enough to make him happy. He still liked his alone time with a good book and still enjoyed his more art-oriented hobbies, but he felt at home with rocks.

He’d go to Ponyville to have a party with his parents and siblings every once in a while, just for the sense of nostalgia. Eating his older brother’s cooking, listening to his older sister’s music, watching his younger brother perform magic tricks, and watching his younger sister fly could now make him smile. Even if they annoy him much of the time, he still loves his siblings.

He grew a beard during his teen years, and is quite comfortable with facial hair. Though he’s far from the oldest of the Pie grandchildren, he still got Grandpa Igneous’ hat when the old stallion passed on, and wears it with pride. Sometimes he gets a little sassy with his cousins, showing off a bit of a smart alecky attitude inherited from the Sandwich side of the family. And he does like to play geologist from time to time, prone to studying any new rock that crosses his path.

He is the only one of Pinkie’s kids that consults the Choosing Stone. Being kind of asocial, he’s never really gone on any dates. Still, the Choosing Stone is never wrong, and any pony that it points him to would certainly be the one for him.

Still, he’s not in any rush. He never is.

Interesting to hear that Rocky has cousins on his mother's side. I wasn't expecting the other Pie sisters to be spinsters or anything, but I hadn't really given much thought to their progeny. Of course, I shouldn't be surprised that you have, given the way you cultivate family trees.

In any case, you can take the mare out of the rock farm, but you can't take the rock farm out of her genes. Or something like that. :applejackunsure:

I really like Rocky Road, he alone blows the Next Gen kids I made up for Cheese and Pinkie out of the water

Could I PM you my own versions of Pinkie and Cheese's foals and you could tell me what u think?
