Friendship is Card Games: Trixie and the Razzle-Dazzle Ruse

We return to the pony novels this week, and hopefully a better showing from the titular mare. Last time we saw Trixie in one of these, G. M. Berrow was channeling the fandom circa 2011 and making her and Gilda the designated antagonists of the piece. Let’s see what she’s up to this time.

Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

I never can tell what's going to get people's attention on this site.

Don't get me wrong, I am by no means complaining. The reaction to The Drop of Ambrosia has been a truly delightful surprise. It's just fascinating how this story seemed to resonate with so many. More than one person has said that I've fixed "Magical Mystery Cure," which I never felt was that broken to begin with. Still, if you're happy, I'm happy.

I can't help but think of A Moment's Hesitation, which bears several similarities to Ambrosia, and was similarly well-received. Celestia caught off-guard, shenanigans surrounding Twilight's ascension, a forced vacation for Sunbutt... Even after Twilight's spent more episodes with wings than without them, there still seems to be a hostile undercurrent regarding how she got them. How peculiar.

Analysis aside, Ambrosia has also pushed my follower count over nine hundred. Thank you one and all; I wouldn't be here if I didn't want to entertain you, so seeing so many entertained is incredibly gratifying.

There's always been a certain amount of annoyance or hostility towards Magical Mystery Cure, a lot of the details are vague and confusing. I mean, I should know, I've been editor of a story that's been dissecting it for years. So a desire to 'fix' it has always been there.

May you always find Draco atop your library.

...wait, nobody tried "IT'S OVER 900!" yet? Really?...

Well, MMC is kind of a rushed episode that really benefits from fanonical rebuttressing and post-hoc foreshadowing in story form. And I'm saying this as someone who generally speaking liked the episode, and think Twilicorn is just great!

Also -- that's a fun story you wrote.

Congrats on hitting 900 :yay:

...I'm pretty sure my first comment on the story is actually the most upvoted comment I've written all year :rainbowhuh:

4263398 To try to justify myself...

I don't mind that Twilight became an alicorn. We all knew she was heading there. I mind that it was her destiny and proceeded to happen in a one-part non-drama episode that was basically all a bunch of individually ok dance numbers strung together using a half-baked non-plot. It makes it feel like she was railroaded into princesshood rather than developing into it and then taking real initiative to achieve it.

Making it into an accident "fixes" it because then Twilight is still Twilight Sparkle rather than a magic tree's cat's-paw.

The most satisfying part of your stories is when you overexplain the magic and mechanics involved. The most disappointing part of Twilight's ascension is that the magic and mechanics were underexplained. That looks like a combo worthy of Johnny himself.

4263398 I think it's significant that MMC isn't the focus of A Drop Of Ambrosia. It's firstly a story about Celestia, trying to keep things from spiraling out of control while pretending to have planned it all out decades in advance. Secondary points include sisterly ribbing between Celestia and Luna, and filly Twilight being her adorable self. MMC is practically a footnote. Which might be why the story works - it can be read as "fixing" a "broken" episode, but that's not how FoME wrote it.

4263501 What, nobody? There's no way that can be right, can it?

Even after Twilight's spent more episodes with wings than without them, there still seems to be a hostile undercurrent regarding how she got them. How peculiar.

I don't think it's peculiar at all. There are basically two camps of reaction to the season 3 finale: Those who enjoyed the musicals, and those who see the massive structural flaws above all else. (And there were accounts at the time of many young girls who were part of the second group, so it's not just a Brony thing.) We've learned later on that the episode was originally meant to be a two-parter that was then cut down to fit into one, but at the time it looked like Twilight dealing with a normal slice-of-Ponyville problem, and then suddenly she's a Princess. It might be a good musical, but in my opinion it was bad storytelling and a bad episode. And the thing is, years later, it's still the same episode it was back then.

It's not like people still hold a grudge over it or whatever, but whenever it's brought up many people look back at the episode and still think it was rubbish. Fannon has been doing Twilight becoming a Princess for years before the show did it, and unlike when Luna Eclipsed introduced Luna, the show let people down with a substandard mess.

...also, congrats on getting over 900! 4263501 mrwgifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Its-Over-9000-High-Quality-Vegeta-Dragon-Ball-Z-Reaction-Gif.gif
