So, a few people have asked me about my opinion regarding the new changeling episode.
1. It's a spike episode.
2. That changeling voice is a sin against all that is changeling.
3. 'I'm the lone good changeling and my own Queen is very evil' cliche. What, did the show writers read someone's 'changeling OC runs away from home and makes friends with ponies' fic?
4. A critical diplomatic situation explained by Spike... via song.
5. They can fucking turn into rocks now?
6. Not enough changelings.
Verdict:
About #3.... I felt it was more of him being a coward, not being "the only good one".
#5. matched my headcanon that they can transform in some odd ways, like getting rid of their ears and such. A rock isn't too terribly out of the question.
It being a spike episode only means that the writers probably had less restrictions writing it.
Although, from the bad reactions I've seen you lot having to the episode I guess they fucked it up anyway.
Yeah this episode is shite. I mean i'm all for a spike and changeling episode. Except they done fucked it up. Could have reformed the changelings and chrysalias by saying they were starving and desperately needed food but noped they just fanfiction the shit out of. I realy was looking forward to a possible reform episode, my dreams ruined

Basically, my reaction:
-Spike episode...okay, odd choice. But maybe this is a chance for the little guy to become more competent as a character and contribute in important events while throwing away the bloody ego of his.
-Changeling appeared disguised as Spike...so far so good.
-"I only wanted a friend."....aaand you lost me.
Seriously, out of all the possible tropes for a shape-shifting bug horse, they chose the misunderstood gentle monster.

Not to mention the Changeling even acknowledge the fact that he is starving and living with the ponies may allow him to find a way to gather love for the hive without the need for conflict.
They knew, and they went with this plot anyway.
I've not actually sat and watched an episode of magical horse adventures for a while now, because honestly it's been a bit rubbish since the okay material got used up and the writers have been frantically polishing turds to see which holds a shine for the longest.
But changelings. I love me some changelings, so I was willing to give this a shot.

But nope, narrative bulldozer in a straight line right through the whole thing like you'd expect from a first-timer fanfic with a "don't read if u don't like lol" disclaimer on it.Would have been nice if at least the voice wasn't quite as bland. Would also have worked better if you swapped Spike for
anyoneStarlight or Twilight, but if you're going for disappointment you may as well go for the full house.Arsonkoala is quite a restrained response really.
I wonder if this (and the show in general for a while now) turned out to be so bland because the writers aren't "allowed" to read fanfics, and there's been a ton-and-a-half of really amazing things written that now can't be done in the show as that would open the whole thing up to the tiniest possibility of legal bullshit?
Yeeeeeeah... the show has not been up to expectations and quality standards for quite a while. In fact, I stopped watching it just before the season 5 finale just because the spoilers alone (regarding Starlight, her motivation, reformation and future role) made me realize that there was nothing left in it for me, and the overabundance of EQG movies and anthro/human content that seemingly everyone loves is hinting at the possible direction of the next MLP reboot, which would totally suck. But back to the now, even the rare RD (my fav pone) episode that was in this season, from what I know, featured RD as if the writers didn't know a thing about her persona.
RD going to the spa and constantly being surrounded by males I could take... But RD fucking up badly in front of the Wonderbolts and then for some reason deciding that impersonating her friends of all the ponies (considering they couldn't be farther from Wonderbolt standards) was cool and the right thing to do? Or RD running away from cookie zombies like a scaredy pants instead of fighting back? Or her pranking Fluttershy even despite her explicitly saying in earlier episode that she would never do it? I don't even want to go on! And this has been happening to all of the Mane6, starting from Twilight being a complete OOC ass to Trixie even despite previously parting on amicable terms and ending in her friends yet again using the same shit they used on RD in Mare-Do-Well and once again ruining her reputation just because they didn't like the pranking part of RD's personality and the way she acted. #True Friendship, take two. If this keeps going on, in several seasons we will have alicornified mane6 without any personal quirks, shortcomings or distinguishing traits. All of them will be girly, all into males, and all will be exemplary pillars of common social behavior.
So yea, over a dozen episodes with heinously twisted character personalities, alicorn babies and nonsensical plot snippets taken partially out of delirious writer's minds and partially from earlier seasons and I can definitively say that I was right in my decision. It makes me sad, it really does, but what can we do sometimes? I wonder if MLP keeps going on for 3 more seasons or if they stop, realize their mistakes dating all the way back to alicornification and making Twilight OP, which in turn caused a need for more and more challenging adventures and opponents, and culminated into the whole Starlight is the new OP unicorn Twilight situation we have now... not to mention that Twilight pretty much has to sit all the time and do nothing in most of the episodes (the writers even made a joke about it) due to how OP she is. Anyways, I hope that after realizing their mistakes the writers can then make a high-quality reboot that will manage to retain the unique atmosphere and feel of the first ~3 seasons without making the same mistakes that the current gen did. I'd love to see MLP that focuses on quality over quantity and doesn't strive to satisfy its audience by introducing tons of new characters, using cheap and predictable comedy or relying on blatant fan service... I doubt they could bump up the rating just a bit to feature more realistic world setting with real evil, but who knows... one can only dream :D

The highlight for me was the guards. They were at least entertaining. Everything with Spike was so... forced.
I think it opened up a lot in changeling shape shifting powers for example: making a new disguise by scratch, and being able to change into inanimate objects. All this was done while "starving" I think this episode has its ups and downs. My verdict 6.5/10.

True. A newborn would never be immediately afraid of it surrounding, let alone it fellow brothers and sisters. Their brain simply wouldn't be capable of it. Not to mention they are part insect, which obey the hierarchy above all else.
I would of be okay if they give the changeling some real backstory and reason for his attitude, but no, instead we got "The moment i was born, i just knew i was different from the rest of my kind."
