    The Little Strand That Crosses

The last four years seem like such a blur now, don't they? There was a brief glimpse of clarity in 2020 and then our consciousness was jerked clear into the in-between—disconnected from the gift of life but clearly still present on this side of the page. Will that change? Yes, but maybe not. The rain doesn't stop but sometimes we don't mind being wet. Let's talk about it.

Equestria Girls 4: Legend of Everfree · 8:05am Jun 16th, 2016

What? You thought it was over? Well you thought wrong. Step right up for the latest Equestria Girls news mixed in with some thoughts of my own.

Okay, so apparently this news broke way back in February. I have no idea how this went completely over my head for so long. I know for a fact I've done some poking around google about EQG 4, but for some reason this slipped past me for almost four months. Oh well. For any of you who haven't been paying attention, here's your first update on our newest installment of humanized ponies.

As the title on the poster says, this movie is going to be called The Legend of Everfree. Equestria Daily has given us some interesting news on it, but just in case you'd rather stay on Fimfiction, I'll highlight the juicy bits for you:

>Camp Everfree apparently has a fashion theme.
>The plot of the movie is Camp Everfree closing down, and the Equestria Girls use their new abilities to throw a "crystal gala" fundraiser to save it.

On top of that, we also have information about a new character named Gloriosa Daisy, who looks a little something like this:

Budget cuts are starting to affect pixel counts too.

Could this mean a little more spotlight on the flower trio in EQG form? Only time will tell. She looks pretty uninteresting, to be honest. It'll be hard to top The Dazzlings, but early promotional art isn't always the best thing to go off of.

We also have one last bit of information in the form of this leak:

Someone doing the Polish dub was kind enough to provide a little sneak peek. This already leaves me a little disappointed, as in the bottom section it's confirmed that Twilight is going to play some kind of role in this movie. Hopefully the plot will center more around Sunset this time around though. I will say one thing: Sunset looks hot as hell in that new outfit, and I for one can't wait to see everything else she might go through in this fashion-themed camp. A lot of juicy fanart fuel too if we're lucky.

From what we have so far, it seems like they've decided to tone down the plot to something much simpler again, and have hopefully learned their lesson from The Friendship Games. The writer hasn't been announced for the movie as far as I can tell, so I can't really make any preemptive judgments on the quality just yet. I'll admit, the fashion theme is a little dorky, but I've let far worse slide in the first two movies.

Honestly, I think it's a good direction with the summer camp theme. It could be a good way to bring the series back down to earth somewhat after the extravagance that we've gotten so far, and could certainly be a good opportunity to give the girls a good, simple conflict to overcome and to focus on some much-needed characterization. I have high hopes for a simple, sweet story about friendship and relationship building, but we'll just have to see. Since the theme is fashion, I can certainly see its overarching use as a toy advertisement working much better with an actually enjoyable story unlike some other content we've received.

Despite my inner cynicism, I'm actually really looking forward to a new Equestria Girls movie. From what little we know about it, it definitely seems like there are less moving parts to break and plenty of opportunities for some quality relationship building. Also, seeing Sunset in that new outfit was way more than enough to get me excited. All the toys are said to be coming out in Fall of this year, so a mid-September release date is probably to be expected. Get hype.

What do you think about it? Should they have stopped at Rainbow Rocks, or should they milk this series for as much as its worth? Is a summer camp the way to go, or should we have gotten a cross-dimensional, epic adventure instead? Be sure to let me know.

P.S. Sunset is still top waif

Yaaay Sunset waifu cute outfit. Hopefully in this film the girl's breasts characters develop more, like you said, as they've been quite small and under-developed

Personally, I hope they use this movie for more world building, to show how the introduction of magic to the human world has changed things, and maybe let us understand how magic actually works there.

On the one hand I have a lot of the same hopes that you seem to: going back to a more basic story, focusing more on characterization and relationships, etc. So far it seems like it might be going in that direction, but on the other hand, so did Friendship Games when we knew as little about it as we do this one. The basic premise of FG - the girls of Canterlot High competing against a rival school in an academic/sporting event - seemed like a pretty simple and down-to-earth idea too. I didn't dislike the movie, but it took a simple premise and added way too many subplots, baffling decisions from the characters (You, Sci Twi, are a poor scientist), and things that were pretty over the top even without the "magic" aspect coming into play (for instance, if anyone here went to a real life school that formed an official motocross team and built a course for a single sporting event, why did no one tell me about this school!?).

I'll still be content if it's at least enjoyable (they weren't the greatest movies ever, but I did still find EG1 and FG entertaining enough) but I'm really hoping to see something more on par with Rainbow Rocks this time around. And I really don't think that's going to happen if they go the route they did with the first or third films.

Finding blogs like this is how I get the only horse-news I read.
The ride never ends but they peaked with Rainbow Rocks. Hopefully this madness will be a more acceptable swing on the wheel of pain than Friendship Games was.

... Get hyped, I suppose.

-Edit
I realized my entire comment was pointless. As if I had to point out a few sentences of my own opinions, stating them to myself.
Sorry.
On another note, the post was an interesting read.

When isn't Sunset top Waifu?

lo espero con ansias

moar sunset = hasbro gets a few more of my munnies.

I'm willing to see more EqG. Rainbow Rocks showed us how good the idea can be, and I'd like the series to at least approach that level of quality again before it ends. Given its current track record, I hope that EqG will fall into a "Star Trek Movie Curse" kinda situation where the even-numbered movies are the ones that don't suck.

I figured Human!Twilight would be a factor in the next movie ever since the end of FG. But so long as Sunset Shimmer firmly holds onto her newly-acquired role as EqG's central protagonist, I won't mind SciTwi. Heck, maybe the writer can learn from the previous writer's mistakes and pull a Sunset with SciTwi, improving her character. It's not impossible.

I don't quite think I can comment on the summer camp setting just yet. As MLP has shown us, seemingly mundane setups can lead to either fantastical adventures or normal slice-of-life stories in equal measures. It's not about the setting, it's about how you utilize it.

Ok first off, i had no idea theres gonna be a 4th movie, im freaking out like crazy.
BACON HAIR IS BACK!!!!!! YUP! YUP! YUUUUUUUUP!!!!!!!! ehm....kinda lost my trane of thought there for a sec.
judging from the description it looks promissing, at least we get a new location and not stay in the FUCKING HIGH SCHOOL!!!
Really hoping they focus a bit more on Sunset this time. And from the title alone i can already tell theres gonna be some kind of Magical Crisis happening, in fact im calling it right now. Theres either gonna be:
A: some giant monster is gonna attack the camp and the girls have to fight it off.
B: a ghost or spirit is hunting the camp.
C: one of the new characters becomes the threat and they have to defeat Him/Her.
Overall im really looking forward to this new Movie, and yeah Sunset does look really hot in that new outfit,i mean she looks hot in everything really.
Oh and lastly, KEEP the PONY Twilight in her own world!!! we already have 1 here we dont need 2 walking around thank you very much.
Jesus Christ thats a lot of text!!!

This already leaves me a little disappointed, as in the bottom section it's confirmed that Twilight is going to play some kind of role in this movie.

I think I am 100% certain that is Human Twilight. I mean, she is now part of the HuMane 6 group while Princess Twilight has other things to worry about.

I know. Twilight has taken up too much of a major role in the last two movies regardless of whether it was Princess Twilight or SciTwi. The fact that she's even in here has me worried Sunset's going to get shunted to the sidelines in favor of her taking the lead yet again.

What was wrong with the Friendship games? Awesome Songs, Awesome Characters, Sunny being a Bad Ass at the end, Cute Scitwi Becoming a Sexy looking Demoness, Sunset finally realizing her role in the World of MLP,..... I loved it!

You commented on my Friendship Games review. You've already seen my massive list of issues with it.

4030668 I did?:rainbowhuh: Sorry, I have a bad memory at times.

Amen to everything you said.
I really hope the team will make the movie look awesome, or at least close to awesome as Rainbow Rocks.

4031342
Rather than looks, I'm hoping that the writing quality will be close to RR.

4030614
Yeah, you can refer back to Holy's review for a detailed look at why FG was such a disappointment, but the way I would say it is that it doesn't feel like a sequel to RR. Instead, it feels like a sequel to all of the problems of EqG1, because almost all of EqG1's problems show up in FG in different forms:

A contrived and nonsensical plot element that the story hinges on.
EqG1: Sunset’s evil plan. FG: Twi’s magic capture device.

An uninteresting one-note villain. EqG1: Sunset Shimmer. FG: Principal Cinch

Superfluous "supporting" Characters. EqG1: Flash Sentry. FG: All of the Shadowbolts.

A scene where everyone grabs the idiot ball and epically fails to notice something completely obvious.
EqG1: Cut-and-paste Photoshop. FG: magical plants attacking the motocross race.

And on top of that, FG has problems all its own. mainly the fact that SciTwi feels like she has little to no character agency whatsoever. These problems could maybe be excused in the first movie by saying that it was a dry run, but it's unacceptable for the third movie to have them.

How dare you compare the best character ever to the unnecessary mess that was Principal Who-gives-a-shit.

To be honest, comparing those problems is kind of a stretch. Principal Who-gives-a-shit and the shadowbolts really filled the same role as Twilight's antagonizers, but didn't actually make it up to being the main antagonists, while Sunset actually played the role of a villain in that movie. Sunset actually got some backstory and an interesting foundation for her motivations unlike anything in The Friendship Games. I don't think the scene with the pasted pictures is very similar in the way they were presented, since with one you at least had the ridiculous humor in the situation to write off as some amateur camp, while the trained attack plants as a plot device can't arouse any bit of humor and just stand out as a lazy attempt to make the movie a little more exciting.

But really I still can't believe you compared Sunset to Cinch. I'm actually a bit personally insulted.

Don't get me wrong, I love Sunset the way she is now. You'll never hear me say a harsh word about Sunset from RR onward. Heck, her being fully promoted to main character was one of the few good things about FG.

But in EqG1...I'm gonna be honest, EqG1!Sunset was a laughable villain with a nonsensical (and arguably impossible) plan. She was my least-favorite villain up until Principal Who-Gives-A-Shit set a brand new low. A big reason for that is because Sunset's backstory is so good. I really love that backstory, it's great. It was a perfect setup for an awesome and deeply personal villain for Twilight. And yet this backstory was not capitalized on at all. I still mourn how Sunset's villain setup was utterly wasted. That being said, EqG1 Sunset was still a more interesting character than SciTwi in FG...

Don't get too worked up about the comparison. I'm just loosely comparing their role (and only their role) in the story to make a point about FG's failings. Even EqG1!Sunset had some good things about her (backstory), but Cinch is my least-favorite character in the entire franchise.

4040432
I was a simpler man back then, and I think she just had me with that brash, bad girl charm (or lack thereof). I agree with you that she had a ton of potential they completely wasted, but it wasn't much of a surprise considering the hour-long toy commercial that EQG1 was supposed to be. Here's hoping they start striving to be more than that again.

4040435
Indeed. Let's hope that LoE's writer knows why people liked RR.

Also, someday I should really make an effort to write a Villainous Sunset fic that utilizes her potential properly. A real Villainous Sunset is an arrogant prodigy with no morals and a huge vendetta against Twilight, who she perceives as having stolen the life that should have been hers.
