When Writing is Your Cutie Mark... · 2:06pm May 28th, 2016
My life is weird, but as far as creative writing, it has never let me down. I was suffering through a drought of story inspiration last week due to the real-life job being a tad more stressful than usual. Then, when it let up enough, I soaked in a hot tub on Tuesday and did a meditation, relaxing completely. When I got out, out of the friggin' blue, I started writing again. Slowly at first, and got one chapter for Mad Seeress of the North done and then something unexpected happened.
I started writing another right after that and yesterday inspiration came flooding back not just to finish a second chapter, but with a breakthrough to a problem I've had with Nyx's character development practically ever since I created her.
This weird little incident cemented in my mind that if I had a cutie mark, it'd have to do with writing. And just as importantly, It reemphasized to me how corrosive stress is and doing what you HATE in life as opposed to doing what you love. When you do what you love, it builds your confidence. When your confidence is built up, you do more of what you love. Business college taught me that you can be successful when you do what you love and do a LOT of it. I love writing. I've gotten better the more I've done it. The better I got, the more I wanted to write. A vicious cycle that is anything but vicious.
It's INSPIRING.
Keep writing, peeps and keep doing what you love and fight the man called STRESS.
I must say, I have to agree with Hail King Sombra. As you may see from my profile picture, my cutie mark does have to do with writing. Writing is not only what I love to do, it's also therapeutic. One can experience love, joy, anger, frustration, the whole spectrum of pony emotions through writing. It is not uncommon for a writer to laugh or cry while sitting at their typewriter. As many authors have commented through the ages, if your story doesn't move you, it probably won't move any pony else, either. I would write more, but unfortunately, life gets in the way. There was a period where I allowed life to get completely in the way. I didn't write anything for years until it hurt too much not to write. I won't make that mistake again. Now I try to write a little almost every night of the week. And writing is not just writing, it's rewriting and research. Sometimes writing is staring out the window for an hour. Sometimes research leads you to more story ideas. If you are truly a writer, then it's not just what you do, its part of who you are. And it's like any other art form. It takes practice to get good at it. Don't be discouraged if your first attempts aren't well received. Keep trying, take classes, join critique groups and find places to get your work out to the world.
Hold on. Did that flying snake thing just hork up it's own existence?
