No Second Prances — First Impressoins · 12:42am May 1st, 2016

Actually managed to catch the latest episode this week, so...

What's-Her-Face is actually starting to grow a bit on me. Not enough for me to actually remember her name quite yet, but still. Talk about 'when all you have is a hammer.' Makes it a bit easier to swallow her magic expertise when it's clearly been her go-to tool for years and years.

And Trixie's back!

And wow, does she have a mile and a half left to go on that 'not being a selfish ass-clown' thing, even if she's trying in her own oh so special way..

Still, I like it. Having somebody that's not Discord wrestling with actually being one of the good guys felt really refreshing.

And as fascinated as I am by Hoof-dinie, I'm quite curious why they insist on having every such character be a unicorn. First Trixie, that puppet guy in Insipration Manifesto, and now him?

I just... don't see what's so impressive with the show when the answer on how is always: 'because s/he was lucky enough to be born with a horn.' Wouldn't such a skill based field have a more even spread of all the tribes since, you know, the cutie mark and your special talent thing...? :unsuresweetie:

Still, minor gripes aside, I rather liked it. A subdued and low-key episode with only personal prides at stake, but not in a bad way. Think there's going to be some gruffling about that in comparison with how that last episode made the fandom explode, but I found it refreshing myself.

Eh, i dislike how distrustful they made Twilight as Trixie. After all while Trixie does come off selfish and arrogant ass, PART of that can be attributed to that being part of her public persona rather than who she really is. Also anything really bad Trixie has done can be put down to the influence of the Alicorn Amulet. So what's to distrust about her?

To be fair, Twilight always gets high-strung and less then rational when Celestia is over and things don't go according to checklist #1 to #15.

And I actually think it's a really good thing that Twilight didn't get to peek at the script to tell whose the 'bad-guy' for the episode was this time. That she was so initially distrustful of Trixie but actually apologized for it later made her feel very 'human' this episode instead of the insufferably always-right friendship paladin she often comes off as.

And too be fair, until this episode Trixie had a two-for-two streak on her visits causing rather decent property damage. Even if you'd gotten more then a five second apology last time, that's still something very easy to mistrust.

Something something Unicorns OP

Eh, wouldn't go that far in this case.

Still, it keeps being very odd to me, how a franchise so built on being true to yourself and what you wish to do in life keeps pigeon-holing what races does what jobs.

It just... seems like one of those unfortunate implications things. :unsuresweetie:

Could be the animators just getting lazy.
How do you justify pony playing around with multiple puppets? Magic!
Complicated instrument? Magic!
Really creepy soul-suppressing magic? More Magic!
etc.

Which may also imply that there are far less Pegasi and Earths committing world-ending crimes.

Could be the animators just getting lazy.

An amazingly simple and sadly probably true guess. :ajsleepy:

3909752 Point, but still Starlight was MUCH more evil than Trixie both times Starlight was a bad guy and the first time Trixie showed up she didn't actually do anything than be mean to three of Twilight's friends who were them selves being jerks. So why does Starlight get to be forgiven and included in Twilight's circle of friends but Trixie get written off as a bad influence?

True... although all the damage Starlight caused was either unmade or shounted to dimensions where the damage already happened years ago, depending on what view on time-travel you prefer. That, and she did yield and have since done her best to make amends and learn about friendship.

Trixie... took of like a thief in the night. Both times. Giving only a verbal apology, before again rushing off after having enslaved the town. And even this time it's rather clear she doesn't personally see any reason to shoulder any of the blame or really change her ways.

And... to be fair to both sides, the Ursa incident was caused by two colts so stupid they don't know what a tall-tale is, and even the amulet thing only really went off rails once it started making Trixie loopy.

So I'll stand by that it made perfect sense to be vary of Trixie, but I'm glad it got dropped by the end of the episode when it become clearer and clearer she's really trying to make amends in her own oh so Trixie style way.
