State of the Author, december 2023

Here we are. Another year is almost over. The winter solstice is around the corner, along with any number of special holidays. It's a white Christmas in Oslo. The snow came relatively early here this year, falling in November and staying ever since, with every apparent intention to stick it out until spring. And I am sitting at home resting and relaxing, also, until spring.

    New story: The Queen's Speech

You know, we as a community have not grappled enough with the fact that in the movie Queen Haven was deposed and arrested, broke out of jail, and then went right back to being queen after as if nothing had happened. Girlboss.

Assemblery · 9:31pm Apr 23rd, 2016

First off, before midnight reaches me I just want to acknowledge that today, April the 23rd on the year 2016, is the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare. That, at least, is an artist's death that we don't need to mourn, in this year of 2016, The Year That Killed Art.

With that out of the way... This week I finally finished the first draft of a story that has held a killer grip on my creativity for the past six months. It's not even a very long story, but it is deep, complex, and extremely challenging to write. It's about Diamond Tiara and Princess Luna, and it's inspired by "Crusaders of the Lost Mark". It's psychological drama, extremely introspective, philosophical, and for lack of a better word, uncompromising. And as I have strange tastes and an unusual perspective, I have absolutely no idea if this thing I've struggled with mightily for half a year will be of any real interest to anyone but myself.

(I apologize if that sounded pretentious as hell. I was trying to describe the themes, not proclaim it a work of genius.)

So there are two questions on my mind.

One: Do you guys want to read an intense psychological drama between Diamond Tiara and Princess Luna, about power, politics, and childhood fears? One that is framed as a single conversation that refuses to let either party go until they've both torn themselves to shreds?

And two: How exactly does one go about finding a piece of cover art for said story? Because while I appreciate that the story currently on top of the feature box has no cover art, not all of us are Estee and it would be really cool to be able to send this story off with a piece of art that wasn't completely inappropriate.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you may have.

I'll be pretty busy for this upcoming week, but if you weren't planning to upload the final story yet until about next weekend then I could make some cover art for you!

1) If you've already written it, of course we wanna read it. No sense in letting it go to waste.

2) *looks at first comment* Seems like problem solved to me.

Other than that, you could always go for a minimalistic/stylistic approach. Turn the problem into an opportunity. I'm thinking Diamond Tiara's cutie mark under a starry sky with a crescent moon that resembles Luna's cutie mark?

Yes, please! :pinkiehappy:

If the first volunteer doesn't work out, I'd be happy to help with the art.

People offering me cover art? And I have to possibly turn someone down? I... I was not prepared for this possibility :applejackconfused:

I will definitely publish it, for sure. Perhaps it is very silly of me to ask "does this sound interesting?", and the only thing that can achieve is to make me more nervous for how it will be received.

Something stylistic would be appropriate. This story is all about the mental landscapes. It's in that same tradition of storytelling as Big Mac Goes to Therapy and The Marriage of Princess Cadance to House Sparkle.

Diamond Tiara and Luna grinding against each other until they're torn to psychological flinders? You definitely have my interest.

Heh, I haven't actually read those two stories: I'm really just here as a fan of your Crown of Night and Clover the Clever series!

But I can understand if you prefer to do it yourself to keep it as close to your artistic vision as possible: I feel much the same way with my projects. The offer is still open indefinitely though, so just let me know if you change your mind!

Diamond Tiara and Luna grinding against each other

Something something now you definitely have my interest amirite

Also, when I thought "representational art that actually connects to the story on a more symbolic level", I thought of "Terror Incognita". I'd say you're pretty good at picking cover art.

Also also, I am hype for this story but I still haven't read "Marriage of Princess Cadance", so...

Thanks, I'll definitely bear it in mind

Well, unlike those two stories that line right there is as close as this story gets to sex :derpytongue2:

Well, I have to properly finish the story first anyway, so I should get to work on that.

I am certainly excited to read the final piece, painstakingly hand-crafted from organic, free-trade electrons, and polished to a luminous gloss with pages torn from the MLA Handbook
:yay:

The Year the Killed art?

ok what did i miss?

David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Prince, Harper Lee, Umberto Eco, George Martin (the Beatles producer, not the author), Merle Haggard, Victoria Wood, Chyna, and dozens of others within a very short span of time.

The only one that I knew about was Bowie Geez Last year a bunch of actors died too .

thanks for the update.
