GoldenVerse Government Setup · 12:47am Mar 29th, 2016
I thought it'd be cool to say how Government works in GoldenVerse Equestria. With the tiers, benefits, and power of each major branch. Now personally while I do have nobility. Since I not only love The Savage Skies Series, and LunaVerse, but most nobility fics in Fimfic. But things here in this AU are a bit weird.
Alicorns: This is the top of the government. Mostly since Celestia and Luna since Discords defeat, even prior to then with Starswirl the Bearded haven't biologically aged. That biostasis means that like mortals they can make mistakes. But their practical immortality means that they learn and experience enough that they can prevent repeating history.
Since a mortal autocracy / head ruler only lives for such a small amount of time before death. Their long lives give them an advantage. In that they can see patterns show up, and stop certain mistakes of the past from repeating. And when they make mistakes, can learn about them to prevent repeats (some times) from happening. I assign a thousand years peace and prosperity to that mostly.
Nobility: Now most nobles don't use their titles, and only get called by their full name and title in certain formal events when they get 'announced' in this AU. But privilege wise are slightly more powerful than the wealthy / upper class non-nobility. Their privileges are:
1) Allotted housing in Canterlot (where land is scarce and expensive). Non-taxed.
2) Similar to the House of Lords, is a balance to Parliament / Commoner-filled Government Employees. In that they review bills and laws approved by the Parliament, and while they can't prevent laws from passing can slow down their approval while asking Parliament to reconsider their standing.
3) Noble Committee. Which is a group of advisors to the Princesses, as well as an oversight (optional) to cities and branches of government. This allows for Nobles to have seats in government matters, and weigh in on matters of governance. Albeit only in a advisory capacity, unless they go into training to get that job naturally.
4) Their ancestral homelands. Technically while they do own the lands, and a set amount of territory in their cities. Starting from the age of Equestria's settling to Canterlot's founding. They have very little ruling power there, other than for non-taxed living, and if they feel like it acting as advisors to the Governors / Mayors of that territory.
5) Can send bills and laws to the Princesses without Parliament looking over them. Since they are the ones responsible of sending all laws and bills that Parliament passes to the princesses, their is an unspoken rule that bills they vote on pass without their counterparts looking over it.
and
6) Officers of REAF / Branches of the Military. Which they can get without needing a college education, like non-nobles would need to be an officer rather than an Enlistee.
But other than that, and their wealth amassed from generations. They hold little actual power.
Parliament:
This makes up a majority of governance. Unlike Nobility which rules for life. Parliament, and non-noble members of governance are assigned by vote. While technically anyone can be voted into Parliament, those with degrees in Political Science have a greater advantage.
The time in which a pony is in office is a 4 year period.
They make and pass laws for the Princesses perusal through the Noble Court.
and finally.
Government Workers:
Just like earth there are tons of branches, departments and (sub)committees. With tons of civil servants working for the government. Although they have no political say / power in governance. They are the life blood that keeps everything pumping.

And that's how government works in GoldenVerse Equestria. There tons of checks in balances, for the most part. And the citizenry rather than nobility makes up a majority of the government.
An interesting setup, it feels like the UK in the late 19th century. Nobles still have a fair amount of power and privileges, but parliament has more.

Yep. In a way that's what inspired it with a bit of personal flair, since Canterlot was inspired by Camelot, so it kind of just clicked to use a version of the House of Lords with a bit of US Parliament, and some personal touches thrown in.
