it begins again: season 6 off to a good start · 10:08pm Mar 26th, 2016
Hey fellas, sorry for the radio silence lately. School has eaten up all of my time and creative energy. I know there's a lot of you who are in college too and are still putting out kwality kauntent, so that's less of an excuse than I wish it was. I think at least a part of my complete lack of writing recently has been that I've set my standards way, way too high, and every time I just sit down and hammer something out I don't feel like it's worthwhile posting. Believe me, I've shat out bad content in the past, and the last thing I wanna do is repeat that mistake all over again. Posting stuff on holidays probably is a bad habit I should quell too.
I've really gotten into tabletops lately, so a lot of my latent creative energy has gone into that instead of writing, which isn't fair to any of you and especially isn't fair to me. On top of that, I've been absolutely terrible at budgeting my time; hopefully, since I have a bit of a buffer between when I'm acting in a show and when I'm not for a few weeks, I can recuperate a bit and get back on the horsefic wagon. And man, if there was anything that today's episode did, it made me want to get back on the horsefic wagon, because it had a lot of really good stuff going for it. More after the break.
I love her
First off, this episode gave a really, really good glimpse into the way this season is going to be structured. I really hope that there's more Starlight Glimmer focus from here on out. She's totally adorable, but also really compelling and interesting as a character, which just goes to show that you don't need to have complex characters to have characters we can root for. After all, this is Reformed!Pony Hillary Clinton Lenin. She's not particularly hard to figure out. What Starlight is, though, is really, really fun to watch.
BUT I LOVE HIM MORE
Second off, Sunburst was also a really neat character. I mean, barring the obvious "liar revealed" stuff, he was just really goofy, really awkward and really interesting. It was neat to see a male character have some major significance in the plot. A lot of people are shipping him with Moondancer, which I think is a neat ship idea, if a bit crackish. But man oh man, I just enjoyed every single moment he was on screen. For whatever reason, he reminded me of some people I know. For the record, this is meant to be a flattering comparison. I want to see more of this character in the near future.
However, all was not well.
the baby
I did not like the baby. It was ugly and made too much noise. It's inability to control it's power was also an awfully convenient (read: contrived) way to introduce some kind of "epic" conflict into a plot that didn't really need it. I mean, sure, it's a season premiere, you want to have some scale, but this wasn't really a way to scale it up from Hillary Clinton's America a fascist dictatorship so real that little kids at Babscon were bawling their fucking eyes out they were so creeped out. I wasn't there I just heard witness reports Apparently this episode was the work of a new writer who'd written some of the much-loathed comics, and it really showed. The beginning of the episode was incredibly talky and insignificant. Honestly, I'd skip the first three minutes of this episode altogether to get to a good place.
Also, the baby's name is stupid. Also, it doesn't look like a proper baby. Fic where Flurry Heart grows up with autism and becomes a royal Christine Weston Chandler pls?
Anyhow, that really sums up my feelings about this new episode. Season 6 is off to a slow but steady start. Let's hope that they're just warming us up here.
