ON MISSING THE ZEITGEIST
Right now I'm working (slowly) on Adagio Dazzle Wants A Burrito. I know I've been saying that for a long time now, and I sincerely apologize for not completing it sooner. Here's how I "work": I'll write a paragraph or two and then get distracted by life. With luck, I'll have it completed within the next few days. Unfortunately, by that time, Season Six will have started its run. And that leaves me in a predicament. Essentially, I assume everyone's going to want fics based on the new stuff, while I'm still writing about characters who only appeared in a movie 18mos. ago. That's what I get for being slow, I guess. Wait, what was I talking about?
I've never been very good at moving on and following the new shiny. Never have been, but now that I'm older it's even more obvious. On the anime and manga front, I'm rewatching and rereading books and DVD's I bought a decade ago. In the case of Oh My Goddess!, it's because I expect to be receiving the final volume soon, so I'd like to reread the other 47 before then.
For some reason, I've really been into romances lately – ones that work out (OMG!, Bride's Story), and ones that go horribly wrong (School Days, because I hate myself). This is reflected in the story I'm going to write after I finish "Adagio" and Lows & Highs – that one may be tough to write, since it'll basically be Sunset laying in her bed wallowing in self-loathing while Rarity tries (and probably fails) to cheer her up, but I committed to it – and that's the AU murder-mystery I hinted at a few blogposts ago. I don't know what to title it – my outline notes call it "Pretty Princess" based on the (NSFW-violent, so I can't link it) pic that inspired the story. But unlike in that pic, Sunset's the misunderstood good guy in my story. "Clear My Name" was another possibility, but I don't like it, too obvious. Maybe "Misunderstood" could work, since it would also apply to the doomed romance that acts as a subplot. I'm only writing this paragraph because I know no one will read it, so it's not spoiling anything: A major character develops an unrequited crush on Sunset, and as a result is the only one willing to help her solve the murder for which Sunset was framed (where are the cops? useless, as always). The Dazzlings will be in this story too and have a major impact on the plot. I also said both Twilights will be in it; that's definitely true, but it may not be in the way anyone expects. Oh, and I'll explain why there isn't another Sunset Shimmer.
Well, sometimes the new hotness isn't worth more than its own novelty value. The Sirens were a brilliant addition to MLP lore, and entertaining characters in their own right.
For those reasons, I'm kinda torn between hoping they develop the Shadowbolts more in EG#4 and hoping they're never seen again. They didn't get developed nearly enough to make a lasting impact IMO.
