A Pegasus' Random Opinion: Considering OCs · 2:42am Feb 11th, 2016
Hello all! I am starting a new blog-post-trend-thing where every Wednesday, I give my random opinion about something, mainly having to do with MLP. I might differ from this fandom and give my opinion on something else, but that would be pretty rare.
Well, today, I am giving my opinion of original characters. Without further ado, head below the page break for some opinionated details about OCs!
OCs are a huge part of just about every fandom, and it's very understandable why. Creators can place their own creations in another universe, and let their creative minds run free. Sadly, many of the creators take the idea of their OC way over the top, and make it a Mary Sue/Gary Stu. (I have even written a satire based on this.)
One look at this pony, who is apparently named Princess Anxiety, you all are probably thinking the same thing: Mary Sue.
From the tattoos adorning her body to the alicorn nobility with celestial mane, this OC's design just reeks Mary Sue.
Now, not all OCs are like this. In fact, a majority of OCs are really pleasing on the eye, and look like they would fit perfectly well in the background.
Personally, aside from the horrible Mary Sue/Gary Stus that make you wonder why you live on this planet anymore, I love OCs. Of course, that would explain why I have an entire story about the life of a few of my OCs, and at least one more that has a pretty big OC cast. I am also reading a few stories that all take place in an alternate universe, which is centered around great OCs that I love. There are also many great OCs that I have seen on this site, and have learned to love.
Now, with all the good stories, there are also horrible ones. I, as well as most everyone else on this site, have seen someone's OC being ripped to pieces in the comments section. And, usually, the author of those stories delete every piece of good, constructive criticism readers give. (If you like looking at the comment section of those stories, you would have fun in this group.)
Seeing all these deleted comments and the over-exaggerated responses make the fandom hate bad OCs even more, since quite a bit of the time, the creators think that their character is too perfect for change and refuse to take anyone's advice. Therefore, the stories have tens upon tens of dislikes.
Original characters are a joy to make, and I would be lying if I said I have made less than ten OCs since I joined the herd. But, even though a lot of OCs are just awful, I still enjoy seeing what other fans can create.
So... that wraps up my opinions on OCs! What about you guys? Comment your opinions below!
My opinion is very similar to yours: Some oc's are very nice, and pleasing to the eye, while others... are Rainbow Dash zebra alicorns that are the secret third sister of Celestia and Luna and can weild all the Elements of Harmony plus the nearly uncontrollable seventh Element that was kept secret and-
And yes, I could go on about that Mary Sue for HOURS.
Basically, I like oc's - Even alicorn oc's, if they're done right - as long as they aren't... well, see Mary Sue rant above.
3747370 I'm right with you on that. However, you've gotta ensure that your OC also has some kind of quirk, flaw, or drawback (or some other negative premise), one, that over the course of their existence, they ultimately overcome/work around. At least, that's a mark of a good OC in my opinion.

Yeah. But, sadly, there are too many Mary Sues that are perfect in every way, especially around this website.
3749805 True dat.
I'm generally pretty good at OCs. My previous OCs have been a ponified Apocalypse Tank named Vera, a ponified A-10 Warthog named Rex, and a Nocturne/batpony named Spearmint Whisperwing who-[REDACTED]

Those sound gr8 m8.
3753432 I belatedly realized that Spearmint is important and if you happen to read my upcoming project anything I might have said would be huge spoilers.
