    If you like D&D stuff, or just tabletop rpg stuff in general, one of the people I follow online is trying to get funding to create something to sell for Dungeon Masters to increase immersion.

    Happy Holidays

    This is your yearly reminder that I wrote a decently funny Christmas story in the long-ago times. If you haven't read it, you should! If you have read it, maybe you should just stick with blurred memories of how good it was.

    Books!

    So, due to my high level connections here and there, I now have an advance copy of several highly sought after ponyfic books. Now that I've had a chance to check several of them out in person, I have to say that Ponyfeather Publishing does excellent work. Anyone able to pick one up, at Bronycon or ordering them afterward, should totally do so.

    Last Week on City Of Doors 7/7/2019

    So, I've actually been posting on my primary blog lately. Which has been nice, given that I've pulled myself out of depression enough to actually do stuff like that. So, here's been my daily content over there:

Here are five old reviews:

Newbie Dish by Wanderer D
The Sweetest Water by Chris

RUN, TWILIGHT! RUUUN! by TaviTwoHooves

My reviews have more personal bias than most you might read. These are not meant for either writing advice or reader recommendation, though I do try to keep both in mind when writing these up. Each of my reviews are written right after finishing the story and are meant for my personal use as I try to figure out why I liked (or didn't like) the story. Trying to understand the 'why' of whatever reaction I had to the story.

I think I found the guy to blame. This was to be an older ponyfic. In the beginning author notes he says, and I quote: “I love these two! There needs to be more of them.” Has anyone else commented about a lack of Lyra and Bon Bon stories at anywhere recently? Anyway, the story itself is quite nice. Sweet Lyra & Bon Bon shipping. A nice how they met flashback and a very believable lower key version of Lyra.

Not nearly as good as the last story I read about Rainbow Dash being bad at cooking. A few rough spots in the writing, mostly scene transitions. That might be from the conversion process to get it on my kindle though. Had the feel of botched conversion. One the other hand it also went with the rough writing in other places so who knows.

A really good fairy tale. Just didn’t grab me personally. Fairy tales are very much a hit or miss kind of thing for me, so the author is certainly not to blame for this one being one of the misses. I did find it interesting the choices of which ponies got linked to each pool. Sure, there was a limited number of famous powerful and/or influential ponies to pick from in the pony canon, but it was still neat. Celestia, immortality, known to all and loved. Sombra, power, feared and forgotten. Starswirl, knowledge, respected but barely known about. Not sure how intentional the subtext was, but found it a good thought-provoking detail when factoring what we know about them from the show.

This author is quite good at zany comedy and has managed epic adventure on a regular basis in the past. Yet I think his real skill is deep emotional stories like this one. Though he does this type of story rare enough that maybe just the really good ones get through his personal story filters to get published. I would put this story up with Hello, Sedna. In fact, it could easily be seen as a distant prologue to that story. Highly recommended, but it will hit you hard in the feels if you let it.

Sweet and adorable. That’s about it really. Writing is functional, concept is bare-bones. I enjoyed it but pretty much forgot it the moment I was done with it.

As always, The Big Master Review List is here: { THE MASTER LIST }
If you know of a text-format reviewer I'm not keeping track of, please let me know and I'll see if they meet the criteria to be assimilated into the list.

If you are an author who wants a more detailed review of a story I've covered feel free to message me. My reviews tend to be fairly light, mostly just reactions to a story right after reading it. I am happy to give a more careful read and reply to anyone who wants more precision and/or feedback.
