Midnight Rising/C&C update: April showers may bring May flowers...

But of more interest is the emergence of 17-year cicadas in my area. Big, ugly, red-eyed insects that are the size of your thumb but basically harmless, as long as you can get past all the shed skins they leave behind on leaves and the everpresent and disconcertly loud background sound they produce as a mating call. Fortunately, the outbreak in my area seems pretty limited. There's a few around,

Midnight Rising update; Feathered Hearts C&C teaser...

Hey, folks. Here’s my weekly writing update. I’m tagging this as C&C since that’s what the teaser below is about, but the blog is about both it and Unleash the Magic - Midnight Rising.

Prereader verdict on new Midnight Rising chapter is in...

And unfortunately, that verdict is unanimous:

Complaints were: too meta, hard to follow, does nothing to advance the plot, and potentially makes things worse while trying to fix them.

Still waiting on Midnight Rising prereads...

Which are particularly important this time, because the first preread I got back was negative. As it came from AJ_Aficionado, whose opinions I particularly value mostly because he’s more interested in the story than the sex, I tend to give what he said about it credence but still want to hear from everyone else before I start making changes to the new chapter.

Mind changed on removing the griffon arc from Midnight Rising + teaser

After receiving pleas from multiple readers to keep the Enter the Griffon chapters in place, I have decided to do so and go with my original plan, which was to simply offer new readers the chance

Story release schedule for January and beyond · 4:49pm Jan 5th, 2016

Hey folks. Just letting everyone know my writing and release schedule for this month and going forward into the new year. For things like this, I really wish I could tag a post to multiple stories.

1) First up in the batting order are some new edits to Raven Regios' Call of Duty: Equestrian Warfare. I intend to update the next three chapters and perhaps go back and look for additional fixes to earlier ones. For those who are curious, I'm basically giving it the Turnabout Storm treatment in that I'm heavily editing and expanding it, much as I did for the Turnabout Storm Novelization.

2) On deck is The Lawyer and The Unicorn. There will be a big new chapter worked on and released this month after I'm done with CoD. As promised, it will be the second heavy clop chapter of the story with not one but two major scenes.

3) Third is writing the final three main chapters to Unleash the Magic. Needless to say, it'll be time for the SunLight to shine bright. Expect a twist ending... and perhaps an alternate one as well. Chapter releases will resume late in the month.

Looking further ahead... there's going to be a side story to UtM that will contain a series of scenes that have been/will be only touched upon in the main story--things like Cadance/Luna/Celestia and all the cross-species action to come now that the ponies are crossing over. I thought about including them in the main storyline, but I'd rather not get bogged down there, especially with everyone clamoring for SunLight. The first couple chapters of the side story will be released along with the UtM story epilogue.

And after that... my priority is to finish off TLaTU and start the next 'phase' which is tentatively titled "The Lawyer and the Unicorn - Trials and Tribulations." Ace Attorney fans can guess what events that's going to cover. I also promised a side story describing untold stories from both TAS and TLaTU, which I may do first.

And somehow, in between all this I need to update Firefly and finish off Five Star Service. I'll be using the former as a break from clop when I need it, but the latter remains back-burnered for now. I intend to finish it by summer, however.

So... plenty planned and to come, but I need to keep only a couple things on my plate at any one time. Late in the year, there will be a new side story to Five Star Service, and a second new unrelated clopfic targeted for Nightmare Night. But before those begin, I want three of my current four stories completed. Only Firefly will not be finished this year. That one's in for the long haul and could well be a fifty-chapter story when all is said and done.

Muahaha!

So I figured out what Midnight would do to Franziska and Phoenix if she ever had the chance.
{Midnight: I know EXACTLY what I'm going to do to you, now that I have the chance!
Phoenix: Oh, geeze, what is it?
Franziska: If you're foolish enough to think you can intimidate us, you;re-
Midnight: Yes, yes, I'm a foolish fool who foolishly fools fools who foolishly believe they can fool me, blah blah blah.
Franziska: Grrrrr!
Midnight: I'm going to make it so things become incredibly awkward later on!
Phoenix: Uh... and what are you going to do?
Midnight: Cast the Want it, Need it spell on Franziska, of course!
Phoenix: Wait, WHAT?!
*Poof!*
Franziska: Phoenix...
Phoenix: Franziska, you have to control yourse-
*CRACK!
Phoenix: AAUGH!
Franziska: Just shut up and take me, you fool!!
Phoenix: *gulp*
Me: Eh, I'm more into Franzworth, but that's still pretty hilarious.}

Dude. Seriously. Enough with side stories to everything. UTM is good, but you should probably leave it after one story. Let somebody else have a go at imagining what those three were doing.

Also, second nightmare night clopfic, and a side story to Five Star Service, which is already a fan made gentleman verse side story?...I fail to see any worth in this...you really need to tone it down. It's getting overloaded.

Dude. Seriously. Enough with side stories to everything.

You his agent or something? Why does he need to stop writing sequels?

Also, second nightmare night clopfic,

Second?

and a side story to Five Star Service, which is already a fan made gentleman verse side story?

It was fan-made... Firesight is a fan. And he's building on his side story. I'm on my third Gentlemanverse Side Story. Are you going to read me the riot act as well? Perhaps you should let Typewriterpony have it as well: he's written three. So we can have all the fun, but Firesight can't?

I fail to see any worth in this...you really need to tone it down. It's getting overloaded.

Opinions aren't facts; fanfiction isn't a business. Why are you trying to tell him what to do? Let him write in peace.

3666291 I'm trying to give some advice, here. Also...A third? For both you and this other guy?

......Jesus Christ. Now that to me really does appear insane.

...Though, I never liked adding onto things too much. It's like ordering a fine class meal in a restaurant and then grabbing a stapler or tape and attaching more freaking food onto it. It may be nice additional food, but honestly I feel it tends to taint the original if it just keeps going on for fucking ages.

Or maybe the Gentlemanverse is a bad concept for this argument, seeing as I find it more disgusting than Unleash the Magic and other kinds of absurdly fetishistic sex fics.

But am I seriously the only person here who thinks that three side stories is too much? About one side story should do it.

Don't make me start in the differences between writing multiple side stories for one main story and writing a side story for a side story. Sidestoryception.

Also, I meant a second clop fic about Nightmare Night. I cocked my grammar up. Sorry.

Also, how the hell do I keep accidentally provoking enraged responses to comments I leave? This isn't YouTube!

Why? Your opinions bore me to death, give me reasons.

This analogy makes no sense. There is literally nothing here that is grounded in reality. Sequels continue a story, give you a different angle to pursue, or just allow you to add on to a good story long after the original was written.

Also, how the hell do I keep accidentally provoking enraged responses to comments I leave? This isn't YouTube!

Because you aren't giving anyone reasons, just opinions. Opinions are cheap, reason is precious. If you were to say, "Adding sequels is dumb because each successful iteration is guaranteed to be weaker than the last" that would be rude and out of place for a simple proofreader, but it would be a solid argument for not acting that way. Showing up on Firesight's blog and telling him he's wasting his time is not only poor form it's just throwing your opinion in someone's face and it looks awful.

I'll take as granted that you really don't understand how you're coming off. Autists tend to be pretty solipsistic. On a side note, I've been told I have Aspergers... yay me. So I get where you're coming from. Now that I've explained this though, a bit of self-awareness going forward will be appreciated.

3666362 By 'weaker' I mean as far as views/likes. Sequels never have the same popularity as the original. This is caused because of a phenomena I call "entropic heat death" where readers leave your story or skip over it to read the first and kill your story's heat rating, causing it not to chart or lowering it's place on the feature list.

This is a huge problem with getting your story noticed.

Still looking forward to Five Stars the most.

And... your point is?

To be quite honest, all fanfiction could be considered 'side stories' to the canon. And it's not restricted to fanfiction either; look at the Star Wars Expanded Universe sometime. There are side stories built on side stories built on side stories built on games based on the canon. It's not a bad thing, despite your apparent aversion to it. (And yes, I am aware that Disney basically bucked the EU to Tartarus, but I don't care. I wasn't thrilled with the new movie, and the EU will remain canon in my eyes forevermore.)

3667078 Just went and looked at the Star Wars Expanded Universe. I now need a serious lie down.

(It is a good point, though. Point is, I'm just too worried Firesight is overdoing his workload too much by announcing two more stories. Hopefully when all of TLATU or Firefly is done is when these two side stories come out.

And now for that lie down. Seriously.

3666055

Be VERY afraid... :pinkiecrazy:

3666084

Are you bucking to get this actually written? Because if you're not careful, I just might. :scootangel:

3666675

Fear not, I will return to it. But I'd like to get some other stuff done first. There are times I wish I could clone myself to work on each of these things simultaneously, but there's only so much I can do at once.

3666256

I appreciate your concern, and it's quite possible this schedule is over-ambitious. It wouldn't be the first time. But... I'm enjoying UtM greatly, and so I'd like to keep it going in one form or another. I know you want me to concentrate on TLaTU stuff, but one thing I've learned about muses--you have to follow them where they are, not where you'd like them to be. TLaTU will be finished, and I'll eventually devote an uninterrupted month to the next phase. But not now.

Ultimately, I'm writing the stuff I want to write, and it's worth noting I have been INCREDIBLY prolific this past year. Over a quarter million words written in five different stories, and I don't sense the well drying up yet. This plan is subject to change at whim, but the one thing that will not change is I will keep writing because I've finally found my creative corner.

3666370

This is a very valid concern. I'm ultimately going to try to finesse it by making sequels as independent as possible. We'll see how well it works.

3667078

I used to be a rabid reader of the EU, and I still have a dozen of so EU Star wars books. My favorites were the Timothy Zahn books, I, Jedi and the X-Wing series. I did like the new movie--lots of spectacle, but also good dialogue and actual acting which is something we were missing from the prequel trilogy. So George Lucas is complaining he doesn't like it? Far as I'm concerned, Disney should plaster that fact all over their promotion material.

3667156 Eh, I'd prefer Franzworth, to be honest. It seems like a much more realistic (not to mention ADORABLE) relationship.

My keyboard is ready

Well, try to keep TLATU on progress as much as possible, please? We have Leo's own sequel and all kinds of other stuff riding on that fic, ya know. I get the muses thing, but...you know.

After all, TLATU has been on a long delay.

3666362 I actually am trying to convey reasoning behind my arguments. I'm just really shit at doing so.

I think what I'm getting at is that things get too over complicated. You end up seeing an interesting story, And it ends up being somewhat hostile and complicated to newcomers. I like to use the Star Wars Expanded Universe as a good example of this. Middle Earth can be considered this by some, as well.

Sequels don't suffer much from this, as they have a linear order, but having branching paths of side stories is is going to get confusing really fast. Hell, even fan made work can often have this occur, with so many poorly made slapped together sequels to Turnabout Storm Classic. (That's the video one. I like to refer to the novelisation as Turnabout Storm EX.

...Does that reasoning make any sense?
