Because of that stupid time travel spell of his. Seriously, what was he ever thinking making that damn spell? And don't tell me it was for the greater good, because if he made it for, say, saving someone's life in the past, it could very well have drastic consequences on the future. We know this now from Starlight Glimmer's pissing about with it.
In fact...WHY did Starswirl make that spell to begin with? Was he bored and did it to see if he could?
P.S - This is a joke blog, but feel free to discuss the matter together you guys and gals. Because I like to hear your wonderful thoughts!

Probably research into a subject of magic not well understood at the time, because you have to remember, he was basically a pioneer in his field.
Know what? On second thought, this is bullshit. That's basically like calling Einstein retarded because he worked on atomic research and therefore helped create the first atomic bomb. It was groundbreaking research in his hands, but it was used for destructive purposes by others.

I like to imagine that his toast burned after he was distracted by a salespony at his door, so he invented the spell to go back and keep an eye on it whilst his past self dealt with the pest.
Probably for research purposes. Maybe he made it just to observe just because he could, an entirely harmless invention until someone came along to fuck things up.
I wonder, did Starswirl create the time spell so he could go back in time SO that he could meet wizards of the past, but ultimately fail (yeah, starlight's OP-ness is shining, but I'm not liking it.)
ORR, did Starswirl just lay around on a couch or in the air and then think "Wouldn't it be cool if you could go back in time" then made the spell.
