It's just a shame people saw this and jumped to conclusions.
Seriously, though. Speaking from the perspective of a guy with a transgender girlfriend and who's very, very, very sensitive to unfair or inaccurate portrayals of gender dysphoria, this episode wasn't negative at all. Even when Sweetie Belle said that what Big Macintosh was doing was "weird", she was still completely supportive. And the judges make it completely clear that Big Macintosh isn't disqualified from the Social because of his gender, but because of his behavior. There is nothing in this episode that's even close to offensive, although there are some uncomfortable moments that seem to come more from the cringe comedy bits. It's really a shame that so much vitrol has been directed at this episode for a perceived slight against transgender people (especially when Big Macintosh isn't even trans here, he identifies as male but is disguised as a female). And the shame only goes deeper when you realize that this episode is glorious for other reasons.
FINALLY, the Mane Six's heroism and the resulting fame is a major factor in the plot.

FINALLY, an episode that tackles a tough topic (wanting to be closer to someone you were once very close to and that you love deeply and completely) and handles it just so gracefully.
And yet all people see is Big Macintosh in a dress and they get all up in arms. This is why we don't get many portrayals of transgendered folk in media at all, and why most portrayals are negative. Because they're afraid of upsetting not transgendered folk, who are desperate to get represented at all, but trans allies, who hear the words "man in a dress" and immediately go flaming people, because they're stupid assholes and they deserve to die in a fire or something idk
Also, that banner on my front page was getting old, so here's a fresh one I made last night.
While I miss the Tittysparkles and JohnPerry quotes, I couldn't find anything more recent because I never write lol so I went with some moderate self-deprecation instead. Maybe someday I'll commission GlacierClear for something or other... Pinkie Pie smoking a pipe, most likely. Idk.

I thought it was a great episode though early on I realized it was a train wreck plot that could only end bad with a positive outcome. Really feel bad for Apple Bloom, two years in a row with little luck at the Social.
And you have to give Big Mac props for trying his heart out.
My biggest surprise was when everyone didn't fall for the blatant teamrocket surprise, proof the writers know what their doing.
