How Should I Release My Next Story? · 12:20am Sep 15th, 2015

So I've finally started on that semi-related "Unmotivated" sequel involving Twilight and Discord living together in a crummy downtown apartment on Earth. I had a better description in my last blog, so here it is incase you didn't read it. BTW, why didn't you read it? :unsuresweetie: I worked really hard on that blog post.

"(Not My) Home Sweet Home" (title pending) -- comedy, sad, slice of life, human, alt-universe?

Set in the same universe as "Sombra the Highly Unmotivated", this one shot or short novella would detail the lives of Discord and Twilight a year after being sent to Earth. As Twilight's friends and other displaced ponies and creatures try to settle into their new surroundings, Twilight becomes more and more unhappy about her current situation. Nearing her birthday, Discord goes out of his way to try and make her happy.

This story would also deal with the small percentage of humans that don't take the sudden appearance of ponies on Earth all too great. When out for dinner at a restaurant, someone insults ponies in general within earshot of Discord. Obviously, he doesn't take it well and events escalate from there.

Since finishing "Unmotivated", I've always imagined scenes between Discord and Twilight, both romantic and sad. I've also always wanted to know what Discord would do to a drunken human that insulted his marefriend. Plus, the slow incorporation of ponies into the world leads to a lot of interesting discussions.

I won't give away other ideas, but just so it's clear: NO SOMBRA, NO STEVE.

Anywho, the rough draft just crossed the 5k mark and considering the original goal for this whole story was around 5 - 10k, it's become obviously clear that it might be a tad longer than I first thought.

So here's the question I'm now curious about:

Do I continue with my original plan and write the whole thing out before releasing it (mostly) in one go? (As in one chapter a day for four or five days.) Or should I release it piece by piece as I finish each part?

One option means a rather silent author for at least a week or more, but then a whole bunch of content in a short amount of time. The other means a more steady stream of Twilight/Discord randomness, yet larger breaks in-between.

Is this whole query worth posting about? Probably not. Then again, I don't blog all that much. Not until I get that 300th follower. Where are you? Why are you doing this to me?

All right. Thanks for reading. New material on the way. Now the only question is when?

How is it that I wasn't already following you? THIS TRAVESTY SHALL BE AMENDED!

It should be whichever you prefer

I can wait for the whole thing.

Do the first one. It'd be a shame if you get hit by a car or something and can't finish the second half of it, leaving everyone on a cliff hanger. Also, no idea if you already know this, but your story can't appear in the Recently Updated box more than once a day, so be careful with the timing for maximum views.

Well, there are pro's and cons on both ideas. The pro's for putting it out a bit at a time, is that more people will see it over time. On the other hand there is that car thing jarey mentioned... I mean, Stephen King... Also, given that you are a pretty popular fella, even if you tossed it all out at once, you have a better than even chance of it sticking on the popular list/featured list. In the end, go with your gut, that way you can't regret being swayed by others advice. :raritywink:

3393619 All right. I'll finish the bastard, then release it over a series of days. Sounds better that way. Been awhile since I've worked on a bigger project. Thanks for letting me know!

3394208 Why does everyone think I'll suddenly die by being hit by a vehicle? I don't answer my editor for a week, he wonders if I've been hit by a bus. I ask how I should release my next story, and everyone tells me to watch out for cars. Now I'm afraid to leave the house! :unsuresweetie:

3393592 I know, right? What were you thinking? :rainbowwild: Thanks for the follow!

3395369 Now I'm worried a car is going to smash through the side of your house and hit you. I hope you are on the 2nd story.

3395676 Nope. First floor of a townhouse style condo. I look out all three of my windows and see the same parking lot outside. Now I'm terrified some older lady's going to jam her car in reverse and plow right through my office window. :flutterrage: I've seen enough Final Destination movies to know it's totally possible too.

3395369 Well, it's better than everyone being worried about you being killed by professional assassins. Or is that something we should be worried about? Did you annoy any mob bosses recently?

Now you just know there's a brony mob boss out there that just now realized "Before the Fall" is on hiatus.

3396035 Wait. You're telling me someone actually enjoyed that story? :trollestia:

3396073 I loved that story, Luna kept making up crazier and crazier lies to Sombra to keep him to herself, I wanted to see how long she could keep topping herself.

mrk

Do it, but release once every two or three days, giving you more time while remaining predictable in your releases.
