The Fandom is Dying · 7:29pm Aug 7th, 2015
Nah, I'm just kiddin'. It's still going pretty strong, as far as I can tell. Lots of fanworks out there, lots of conventions, and so forth. But you know what? I kinda feel like it really is dying. Luckily, I realized that it's just me and not the fandom that's slipping away. Lemme explain.
Over the last year or so, my passion has slowly waned. I find myself caring less and less about fanwork and ponies in general. I tried to go back and rewatch the earlier episodes, but the thrill was short lived. Even the so-claimed golden age of Friendship is Magic doesn't feel as awesome as it once did. It feels about the same as it does now. I've become more critical of fiction since doing the writing thing here, and so I view the show differently even in retrospect. I've also ended up going through some rather unfun times, as of late. Couple this with a growing cynicism regarding writing in general, and I just don't care so much anymore.
In other words: the fandom isn't going down the tubes, I am. I fully admit that it's me, not the show or the community.
Now, I'm not saying that a lot of the analytical blogs and videos about the fandom dying are simply being made by bitter individuals who shift the blame for their lack of passion to the fandom and the show (though the thought obviously occurred to me), I'm just saying that it's the case for me, albeit that I realize and admit that it's just me.
All that being said, I still have a ton of stories I want to tell, and I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel. Don't count me out just yet. I still wanna write about Sunset Shimmer getting the flu. I still wanna write about Coco Crusoe's love affair with a merpony. I still wanna write about the changeling army trying to cheer Queen Chrysalis up on Mother's Day. I just gotta push aside my angst, crank up some awesome music, and just do it.

People will leave the fandom, possibly a lot of people. If you do leave the fandom at some point, I do wish for you the best in all your future endeavors. In the end, there will be fans for decades on, and we'll always be here, even if our numbers dwindle. Yourself and anyone else who leaves or has left will always be welcome.
For now though, I look forward to your future works.

I do hope to see more from you. Even if it's Sunset Shimmer. I swear, yours is the only Sunset Shimmer I can truly enjoy as a character in fanfiction. Maybe as a side character playing the straight man(woman I suppose) to the Dazzlings shenanigans is okay, but she generally isn't all that interesting to me half the time when I read other peoples Sunset stories.
No offense to other Shimmer writers out there. Bootsy just does her better.
I can't wait to see how Sunset deals with her first flu? Maybe she's been sick once before back in Equestria? Either way, Sunset vs The Flu sounds awesome.

Indeed. I see so many proclaiming that the show and/or community isn't as good anymore, but I wonder if it's just a form of disillusionment. People seem to come in thinking this fandom is somehow so different from others, then it turns out we're pretty much the same. I've come to that realization, but I think the problem is just me growing kinda bored with it all. I got really into it and burned out, like I have with other things. Maybe this fandom attracts the people prone to such behavior.
I think this sort of thing is natural, though. Ask anyone who has hung around here for a while, and I bet they can tell you about the people they've seen leave. People come, people go, and everyone looks back on older days with nostalgia goggles. Just the way of things. Not that I plan on leaving anytime soon.
