This was actually pretty great. M. A. Larson gave us "Slice of Life" the other week, but proved here that he's still more than capable of writing excellent MLP:FiM episodes of the traditional type. It's a shame there wasn't room for a song, as it's been ages now since we've had one (well, seven episodes), but other than the equally traditional slightly rushed ending, I can't find much to complain about. The flashbacks worked, Pinkie worked... everything worked, really. Maybe not quite a five-star episode as it didn't leave me wide-mouthed in amazement, but very enjoyable and an easy four. This should be one the S1 fans can get behind, too. Nice! (Not to mention the cameo from Starlight Glimmer!) Update! On re-watching, I like it even more. I really do now think it deserves a five. ★★★★★
Wait, what cameo @_@

3207999 It's surely a deliberate hint -- especially given that this episode was written by M. A. Larson, who knows exactly what he's doing with this sort of thing. Agreed, it's extremely creepy, but then Starlight Glimmer is extremely creepy. I've been wondering ever since the S5 premiere about her line: "This one [cutie mark] belongs to a princess. It could be very important to our cause." We've never really found out why SG has been acting the way she has. I'm as certain as I can be that there's something big going on in the background here. After all, they need a finale that doesn't just make people say, "Meh, 'Twilight's Kingdom' was better"...
