Song of Thunder: Inspirations · 12:31am Jun 30th, 2015
This little blog is more of a shout out to those who helped inspire my writing of Song of Thunder, than anything else.
First off, I first began conieving the idea of writing a ship fiction after reading Noble Thought's Ghost of a Rose. If you have not read it, I strongly suggest doing so, it is a fantastic story. Reading how well Noble wrote Rose and the sheer amount of self he put into his story was the first thing to prompt me to write a shipping story. The interactions of Roseluck, Post Haste, and so many more was so well done they planted the seeds for me to write my own romance story.
I want to be perfectly honest in saying that I've never written a romance story before, and truthfully hadn't ever planned on doing so. Shipping just wasn't my thing, and while I didn't begrudge those who did, I just wasn't interested. After getting to know a number of other authors who did write shipping stories, a slow interest formed. Between Noble, Mindseye, Zomg, Foals Errand, TOW (That One Writer) and others, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself to write a romance story. All of these folks helped push me to finally writing it.
When it came to characters to ship, I was still hesitant to use established characters. Many who know me knows I'm an original character writer, but I realized that OC romances are not as... well received. So I knew I was going to have to go with established characters. I chose to avoid the mane six because I really don't see them viewing each other in a romantic way. I know many have, just I have yet to see it. So don't kill me for saying such. Anyway, I considered the back ground ponies for my characters. I settled on Lyra because she is my favorite unicorn after Rarity and Trixie (best pony). When I read of her background and what her mark means, she pretty much wrote herself into my main character spot.
The male main character was a bit harder. Few of them had any characterization and I didn't want to go with Big Mac, so I searched around. I settled on Thunderlane because his background reminded me of a character I once rped as in a Neverwinter Nights server. So it was easiest to establish his characterization and slip into his hooves when writing for him. Granted there are some differences, but still.
So no matter how it turns out in the end, I enjoyed writing Song of Thunder. It took me a while to finish it, but once I did, I felt great. I do want to point out, I started writing it months before season five ever started. So the episode Slice of Life had absolutely no bearing on Song of Thunder. As both my Lyra and Bon Bon are far... far different from their show counterparts.
To all who helped me fashion this story, you're all the best. To those who have read it and followed it, you are the best. As of this blog post, it is half way published. Enjoy it all folks! Hope you like it!
Cheers!
Hey! That's me!
And don't you fret, Zod. I will have you writing Mane 6 shipping someday! Mark my words! But in the meantime, I'll settle for a TrixieShy collab.
