Gay marriage in USA is now legal · 3:40pm Jun 26th, 2015

America has apparently legalized gay marriage. Did not see that coming this side of the decade.

Sweden often get's held up as damn dirty communists a deeply liberal country, and we haven't gotten quite that far yet. (Even if to be fair, civil unions are legally equal here.)

Still, not often we get outdone in matters of civil liberty, and I'll freely admit I underestimated America as a nation on this issue.

Well done, America! And congratulation to all happy couples this will effect! :yay:

My only issue with this, and something that would have eliminated 90% of the controversy, is that government should never have used the term 'marriage' in the first place. It is a term for a religious sacrament originally after all, the government should not be adopting religious terms period, any more than religion should be allowed to set government policy.

In the past when a U.S. legal term proved to have too narrow a definition that needed to be expanded to incorporate a wider group of things, a new term was created and previous instances of the old term were converted to the new one. For example Rape became Criminal Sexual Assault, though socially it is still called rape.

If they had just gone ahead and announced that the legal contract of 'Marriage' was being updated to be called 'Domestic Union' and all marriages were now Domestic Unions in the official paperwork (to make it distinct from the religious sacrament.) Then have it include all the rights of marriage but from the beginning it would apply to both Hetero and Homosexual couples, then everyone could be equally unhappy with it. (Socially it would still be called marriage and churches would still be able to get a certification to grant a Domestic Union when performing their religious marriage sacrament.)

The religious would be unhappy that the government was no longer directly sponsoring and validating their religious terms, and a small subset of the gay rights movement would be unhappy that they couldn't sue churches for refusing to marry them.

I'm not a fan of religion, in fact I'm often rather disgusted by it, but I still think it is wrong for the government to swoop in like this and start adopting and changing religious terms at will. It's like... If the government announced that it was adopting an official definition for 'Mecca,' then they changed it so that you could only pray to it while facing north, and any Muslim group that continued facing East to pray could be sued. Well maybe not quite that strange, but the principal is the same.

All that being said, this decision is still an improvement.

Hahhahahaa!
Sorry, sleep deprivation is a bitch.
Always was too ambivalent about this issue, but it convenient. Too convenient. And I suspect it's not even a second or third layer of this thing.
I need a finally working tinfoil hat. And booze. Lots of booze.

3183501 Very well written, down and right to point. This is a big if not the big whole hiccup to this side of things. The rest being a mix of intolerance, closed mindedness and control. Its a shame i can't do more than thumbs up.

Thank you, pretty much explains my ambivalence, but much more elaborate.

suitable subset of the gay rights movement would be unhappy that they couldn't sue churches for refusing to marry them

Fixed. Don't forget, suing someone is a typical pastime in USA.
And don't forget about small bakeries. Evil, horrible stores.

Only they never would do that, because value their heads. :trollestia:

Right after the bakery thing, a different reporter went into a Muslim operated bakery and asked if they would cater a gay wedding. They said absolutely not... yet no one got outraged about that. It is interesting that only white Christians are acceptable targets in the U.S.

3183559
Yup. You can't be racist against white and all that rot.
Actually, white is a new "oppressed minority", but everyone are too attached to their kool-aid to finally accept it. :trollestia:

3183559 Because they make them selves such targets maybe? It's certainly the white so-called Christians who complain the loudest about being discriminated/oppressed/under attack despite the fact that White and Christians are the majority of the population and hold the lion's share of the wealth and power. It's certainly them who constantly spew the most and most vile bigoted nonsense. Or maybe it's because the white so-called Christians are trying very, very hard to redefine Religious Freedom as the freedom to impose there Religion on others, to teach creationism as science in schools and pass laws that say fertilized egg are people.

Your sarcasm is so heavy, that I can't make heads or tails of your post.

Like a girl in mini-skirt in back alley? How progressive of you. :trollestia:

hold the lion's share of the wealth and power.

Some fat cats in the skyscrapers? Yup. Poor schmucks like moi? Not so much.

It's certainly them who constantly spew the most and most vile bigoted nonsense.

Oh, you will be surprised. It's just when melanin-deficient says something "bad" (N.B. quotes) everyone and their dog is onto him/her. But when reverse story happens - everyone "so noble this" or "oppressed that", "we should forgive his anger".

Or maybe it's because the white so-called Christians are trying very, very hard to redefine Religious Freedom as the freedom to impose there Religion on others, to teach creationism as science in schools and pass laws that say fertilized egg are people.

How this kind of christians is different from liberals who ban Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in schools, teach "gender studies", rewritten history full of omissions and other bullshit in colleges and universities and steal flags from government buildings?

so they're appalled to see Muslims hold same values as our
"civilized" religion with the whole not serving gays thing...

No, they are appalled that some animals are more equal than the others. Real reasons for that are, though, obvious to any observant person, and were already mentioned. :trollestia:

OK, less soapboxibg, more reading ponies. Ponies must flow.
