Because I have a severe case of obsessive compulsive disorder, every morning I check to see if Fly Away, Sweet Scootaloo has gained any more up/ down votes. You guys don't know how much it means to me that you read and liked and followed me. I won't be one of those writers who ignores her followers. Anyway it hurts me that my story has as many down voted as it does. What did I really expect, however, with a story of such a controversial nature. Does it bother you guys too when your stuff gets downvotes? Thanks again, hope you all are happy joyous and free.

Oh yeah, it definitely bothers me, especially when there's absolutely no reason for it (which seem to be the case for most of them, I'd think). I really wish people would give a reason for them ALL the time.
Also, you're right about suspecting getting them because of the nature of the story. Almost all stories that go down that certain path will most definitely have negative votes and uncomfortable readers. But don't let it get to you too much. ^-^

It makes me so happy to know that you don't ignore your followers

I hate downvotes too. I personally think you should always give a reason for a downvote.

I really hate it when people downvote something they find offensive when they've been warned of it before even reading. Or those who downvote without even reading.

I also hate commies, so yeah, I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't think everyone is equal. But, alas, that is a subject for another rant.

There was a group called "No Dislikes" and I had four stories listed in it.

Somebody recently went through the entire group and systematically downvoted almost every story in it. :flutterrage:

The group is now called the "Less than 10 Dislikes" group, or something like that.

3019179 ugh, people are assholes. This is why I work with dogs

Sadly, downvotes with little to no reasoning behind them are just a consequence of posting any form of artwork onto the open forum of the internet. This is especially true when you express anything that falls into the category of counter-culture, which this story is just embroidered in. Foalcon, rape, and Scootabuse ending in suicide will naturally draw out the haters, many of which will leave downvotes or nasty comments without even actually reading the story.

The best thing you can do is ignore it. As an writer myself and a relatively intelligent woman, the number of upvotes to downvotes factors exactly 0% into my decision as to whether I want to invest my time in reading a story or not because there's no way to know from that alone how your audience is actually receiving the story. For me, one intelligent comment is more valuable an infinite number of votes in either direction.

That's cause I'm weird. And I see people who downvote without actual cause in the same light as I see commies. Not going to say my opinion is right, or popular, but it is mine.

I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion, whether I agree with it or not. However, I don't think we should use our opinions to beat other people over the head with. (Not saying I don't, I'm not perfect, but I try not to.)

3019270 Well said. I agree.

It would be awesome to have the option to require a 10-30 character reason (almost like a tweet) for any downvote (and maybe for upvotes too) so that potential readers can look at them and decide whether the reasons are relevant to them. As many of us might have noticed, Knighty and company (Fimfiction's administration) are more concerned about the reader than the writer, so, maybe, if they see it benefiting more than just the author, they might implement something like this, but it's not very likely.

I've come to pride myself on my downvotes, personally, but I don't expect many enjoy rustling jimmies as much as I do.

I have never actually downvoted a story as it doesn't actually accomplish anything in my point of view. As everything I've ever read and enjoyed on any level is reflected in my writing, in either style or theme, I feel like the greatest slight I can give to something I don't care for for one reason or another is to forget it or not read it in the first place.

From my experience, stories with 1:1 upvotes to downvotes ratio tend to be the most interesting.

I don't suffer from downvotes myself, as I'm neither writer nor artist, but I hate to see them on works of others. Every time I see many downvotes on a good, but controversial piece, I'm afraid it'll discourage the creartor from creating more in the genre.

Considering I enjoy a lot of weird shit, including foalcon, rape, watersports, scat, castration and so on, I see a crazy amount of downvotes based on just topic. It's stupid, but it's life.
