A quick public service announcement from a resident of Dixie · 12:43pm Mar 10th, 2015
If you're going to write dialogue for any of the Apple family, or just any pony you want to have a country/southern accent, please refer to the following guide:
No one in the south/midwest/where ever addresses a single person with 'y'all'.
Thank you for your time, dear friends! Have some ponies getting their nosh on:
Bzzzzzzt, incorrect, happens all the time.
At first I was like: "Dixie"? That's a clever way to call futa Tri...
And then the page loaded.
Maybe not in your South. I hear it all the time.
It really just depends on where, I think. I have heard it, even as far north as Indiana, but pretty much exclusively in the more rural areas.
However, I do not think any member of the Apple Family has used y'all as a singular in the show, so this is still pretty relevant.
2864988 2865018 Well put, indeed. I hear it all the time here in Missouri, too.
From the mid west myself, and y'all is all to common.
2865059 Texas here.
2865185 Cool! Texas is one of my favorite states!![:ajsmug:](https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/ajsmug.png)
I'm from Texas, and I don't think I've ever heard y'all used in the singular.

Certainly it varies by region. I've heard it both ways. I've had this discussion before in various story comments, and it never ends well.
It's also more than a little context dependent. In Tennessee we normally use the singular you, but if I run into an old friend I'm liable to say "How y'all doing?" - the y'all here being understood to mean not just my friend but also their family.
I live in Georgia, just a bi north of Atlanta in Cheerokee county. We say "ya", not "you".
2865232 Yeah, I think it does, really.
And I certainly don't want to start an argument, so i think that this is where I'm gonna jump off the site and do some work on Chapter 2 of my story. I'm late doing that as it is.
So, bye for now, y'all. See ya all later today sometime!
2865310 It's definitely prominent down here in Florida, I love living down south. Southern Hospitality.
2865232 OK, I can dig it.
I'm in Michigan and I say y'all just for peoples' reactions![:moustache:](https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/moustache.png)
Ya know ya's wrong! I can think up plenty-a-ways to say ya and not haveta mean that there's a group der.
I think, in all honesty, that I've said you more like "ya" before. My Appalachian accent sometimes bleeds through, excuse me.

Everyone - everyone - always seems to forget this:
(Jump to 2:53. Can't seem to get the timestamp URL to work.)
I always hear FIMFiction authors complaining about people misusing "y'all", going as far as to claim nobody does it just because they haven't heard it themselves. Is there some concerted effort on the part of writers to stamp this out? I mean, to be fair, it is incorrect. But then, so is a lot of southern vernacular. Why does this merit special attention?
2865364 Yeah, I kinda noticed that summer before last, when we went down there to visit my oldest nephew and his family where they live in Gainesville. (He's the pastor of Harvest Christian Church down there.)
Hey, Southern Hospitality is the best kind!
2866615 I live an hour from Gainesville.
2866682 Really?! Cool!
2866693 Yea, just look up the Florida Horse capital of the world. It's a historic city.
2866707 Okay, I will.
Thanks.
2866795 No prob.

Well I'll be damned.

It's alright. Like I said, everyone seems to forget this.
Scene is circa Season 1, too, so the characterization of the Mane 6 was only just becoming established.

2867531 I'm guesing you took a look?
Y'all seem a mite upset about it!![:rainbowwild:](https://static.fimfiction.net/images/emoticons/rainbowwild.png)
Around here (Pittsburgh), the word was "yinz".
2895860 PA is a strange, strange place, my friend.
