Pony origins myth · 4:26am Feb 20th, 2015

So, there was thread started in the World-Building Alliance group about origin myths for different species. That got me thinking, and then this happened:

In the beginning, the great being Equidae was creating the world and everything around it. In one corner of the world She created a garden and filled it with plants and animals that She loved. But Equidae was a busy creator, with much work in the world still to be done, and She could not tend to the garden as She desired. Equidae thought on this, then took some earth from the garden and a nail from Her hoof. She molded it into the shapes of ponies and gave them life. These were the Earth Ponies, and to them She said "The strength and vitality of the earth, and all things that live on it and grow in it, are yours to share. I give to you this garden to nurture and care for, and in return it shall nurture and care for you." And the Earth Ponies were happy, so Equidae went out into the world to continue Her work.

When Equidae returned to the garden some time later, She saw that both the garden and the Earth Ponies had prospered as intended. But the Earth Ponies were not happy; instead they were tired and weary. "My little ponies," She asked, "Why are you tired and weary?"

"Great Equidae," the Earth Ponies cried, "The weather you have created is wild and beyond our control. The storms scare us and damage the garden, so that we must always work hard to build and repair it. We have no time for fun and games; will you tend the sky for us?"

But Equidae was a busy creator, with much work in the world still to be done, and She could not tend to the sky as the Earth Ponies desired. Equidae thought on this, then took some clouds from the sky and a feather from Her wings. She molded it into the shapes of ponies and gave them life. These were the Pegasi, and to them She said "The strength of the storm and the freedom of the open sky, along with the nurturing rains and gentle winds, are yours to share. I give to you the sky to tend and care for, and in return it shall tend and care for you." And the Earth Ponies and Pegasi were happy, so Equidae went out into the world to continue Her work.

When Equidae returned to the garden some time later, She saw that both the Earth Ponies and the Pegasi had prospered as intended. But the Earth Ponies and Pegasi were not happy; instead they were scared and frightened. "My little ponies," She asked, "Why are you scared and frightened?"

"Great Equidae," the Earth Ponies and Pegasi cried, "There is much in the world you have created that we do not know. The magic of the land and sky is beyond our control, so that we must always work hard to understand it. We have no time for fun and games; will you stay and teach magic to us?"

But Equidae was a busy creator, with much work in the world still to be done, and She could not tend to the learning of magic as the Earth Ponies and Pegasi desired. Equidae thought on this, then took a piece of the horizon and the tip from Her horn. She molded it into the shapes of ponies and gave them life. These were the Unicorns, and to them She said "As your hooves touch the land and your horns touch the sky, the secrets of the land and the sky are yours to discover and share. I give to you magic to tend and care for, and in return it shall tend and care for you." And the Earth Ponies and Pegasi and Unicorns were happy, so Equidae went out into the world to continue Her work.

When Equidae returned to the garden some time later, She saw that all the Earth Ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns had prospered as intended, and founded a great nation that they called Equestria. But the the Earth Ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns were not happy; instead they were worried and uncertain. "My little ponies," She asked, "Why are you worried and uncertain?"

"Great Equidae," the Earth Ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns cried, "You have given us the land, and the sky, and magic. We have worked hard to build, and understand, and share. We now have time for fun and games; but thoughts of the future leave us tired and weary, scared and frightened, worried and uncertain. Will you stay and guide us?"

But Equidae was a busy creator, with much work in the world still to be done, and She could not stay and guide the Earth Ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns as they desired. Equidae thought on this, then took the light from the sun and moon and stars, and a piece from each of the Earth Ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns . She molded it into the shapes of ponies and gave them life. These were the Alicorns, and to them She said "As their is a piece of every pony in you, so you must share yourselves with every pony. I give to you all of ponykind to tend and care for, and in return they shall tend and care for you."

And all the ponies were happy.

Lovely :pinkiehappy:

...for a children's book, that is. :derpytongue2:

Eh.
I like my way better. Silanxi made earth ponies of soil and stone. Rhewedig made pegasi of wind and cloud. Selitos made unicorns of gemstone and magic. Silanxi breathed life into the ponies, the land, and the air itself. Rhewedig culled them, made them tough and fierce to succeed against her hardships. Selitos granted them honor and wisdom, and taught them reason.

Just a slight plot hole in that Equidae has wings and horn and hooves, yet the alicorns are portrayed as a new invention.

Is Equidae then a cosmic horror, not a pony-shaped being? Because that's a lovely undertone.

Why do you not have a drabble collection for this to go in? I still cannot fave blog posts!:raritycry:

I admit a slight irk at the idea that only unicorns have magic but I'm a pedant that way.:raritywink:

I was thinking the same thing about not being able to fave blog posts.

I got a slightly different interpretation about the magic thing--earth ponies have earth magic, and pegasi have sky magic (this is simplified) but they had work to do and doing that work AND studying their magic was getting to be overwhelming, so Equidae made unicorns to study the magic and teach the other races. The unicorns are supposed to be teachers. Does that make sense?

So, given the nature of MLP:FiM and its target audience, pretty much on target? :derpytongue2:

Not a plot hole; quite deliberate in fact. It's up to the reader/listener to decide what She looks like.
Just to make things even more interesting, I was going to have Her take some sea water and pluck out a scale to make the Sea Ponies, but ended up not putting that in.

Because I don't dribble drabble enough? Maybe I should use this to start one?
Unicorns have more explicit use of magic; pegasi and earth ponies have very intrinsic magic, to the point that they don't even think of it as magic.

Pretty much spot on with what I was aiming for - the idea is that all this original "creation magic" is running around loose, and the earth ponies and pegasi are all "weird freaky stuff keeps happening, which we call magic, and we're so busy looking after the land and sky that we don't have the time to figure out how it works... Help us!"

This is what I get for reading and not paying complete attention:rainbowlaugh:

Very cool clarification/theorizing and yes you should. though more importantly I think you have some writing you said you'd let me help on...:duck:

I have started on it - I just haven't got very far yet. Probably because I got side-tracked by this. :twilightsheepish: It's 90% plotted out in my head, it's just a matter of finding the time to write it. :raritydespair:

2819101 The time spent reading and replying could be spent writing. Shoo!
