I'm doing all the things... · 4:14pm Feb 18th, 2015

Well, I was made a contributor to the new Goodfic Bin yesterday. Hell if I know why I volunteered...

Oh, actually, I do know why. Despite becoming increasingly busy, I do have a reason as to why I joined the administrative process of another group.

See, the Olympus Group is quite small, and whilst that's not at all a problem, it kinda becomes a bit redundant when it comes to getting noticed. I'm of course glad to help as much as I can, but it'd be nice is some of the stories that really impressed me got noticed a bit more.

Well, since I review them anyway, why not find a way to stick them someplace else, if they're that good, right?

In essence, me being a contributor on the Goodfic Bin won't really add to my workload all that much. Stories I read for those guys and like will go into the Olympus group, and stories I like from Olympus will go into the Goodfic Bin. It takes me a grand total of five seconds to add a story to another group, and it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for fun and interesting stories.

So, with that, I've also decided to do a seperate review of each story I recommend to the Goodfic Bin, because the stories I let into Olympus are stories that, I believe, are decent stories. Since I like keeping a record of everything, I'd also like to keep a record of why I think a story makes the transition from decent to good.

I'm not sure how regularly I'll do this, but I'm thinking four stories at a time, in a blog post.

Our current line-up is Shooting For Friendship, Just Like Her, and Quizzical, by Verbose Mode, Babs(somethingsomethingnumbers), and JMac. When I have a fourth, I'll begin.

Also, although I've been putting my own stories (the good ones) into Olympus, I am not suggesting my own work for the Goodfic Bin. I dunno why. Some dumb reason, probably. I'll regret it later, but hey, that's what whisky is for.

Have a good one.

2808029 It's partly because it's left field that I liked it. To cut a long story short, there are several things that pleased me about the story especially, aside from the obvious 'it did nothing wrong':

-it showcased the girls acting off one another in character and in a very friendshippy way. This is surprisingly rare, as most people, myself included, tend towards romance.

-the premise IS odd, but its treated in a very straightforward manner. A lot of stories would have made that a one-shot and an absolute mess of random madness. (the equestria girls play airsoft lol kind of thing). Instead, you treated the story diligently and interestingly, despite the strange circumstances. In fact, it's not even treated as if it's strange: past the first chapter, it wasn't a question of 'ooh, EG are playing airsoft, how novel' but an actually interesting story. It's more than it's surprise value.

-Each character is both present, but is important, and contributes to the story. Again, as someone who more often than not hides Pinkie away in a corner because I can't write her well, I really respect that.

I'll probably be repeating myself later, but the bottom line is that although it may not be an ultra-deep character analysis, it's fun, does everything well, and managed to keep an odd premise interesting and even took it seriously.

Maybe I'm just crazy, but it felt like it was a damn good story. But what do I know: I do engineering.

2808062 Possibly. There's something to be said about a story that can be fun and interesting without being serious and deep. At least in my opinion.

But, I'm the guy in charge of submissions and contributing stuff, so I guess my opinion matters now. Who'd a thunk it?
