Exam Results Came In! And apparently, I'm Still Clever! · 2:28pm Feb 12th, 2015

Yes, exams went smoothly, apparently. I confess I was a bit worried for Calculus and Differential Equations, but apparently that went horribly for everyone, so they were inclined to be lenient.

This means that I can drink excessive quantities of drink, but this time, in a good way. Mostly. Maybe.

Probably not.

Last thing on my agenda is a lab report, and then I can dive right back into the Olympus reviews. I'll try and get some of the old ones out of the way first (I think Quizzical has been there since day one).

Not to mention, my latest AppleDash story (with the current working title Let Sleeping Ponies Lie) is almost finished too, minus a handful of edits. It stands at 10K words: a pretty impressive one-shot, if I do say so myself. My main concern is that it swerves from an initial premise to a larger, more impressive problem throughout the story, and if I've learnt anything from reviewing things, is that I'd rather that it doesn't come out of the blue.

Therefore I'm working hard on foreshadowing and pacing, first and foremost. I've tweaked Dash ever-so-slightly, but nothing I haven't done before (What Do I Win? was a prime example of me messing with the characters, and those changes were well received).

I'm confident this is one of my more impressive stories, AppleDash wise. It plays off what I believe to be the inherent natures of both Applejack and Rainbow, and tackles the subject of lying... a theme that Applejack, at least, is more than prepared to tackle. And when you take a good long look at Rainbow Dash, you realize she isn't that far from the subject either. She lies about her own abilities enough and exaggerates the rest... I don't believe that her character is alien to the matter of truth-over-falsehood.

But is lying really all that bad? I'm not so sure. I've seen Applejack be portrayed as 'never tells a lie', but isn't that a bit blinkered? She represents honesty, but I'm not convinced she's a perfect champion of truth. And even fundamentally, is lying really a bad thing? We all lie, after all. Why? What are the exceptions to the rule 'always be honest?'.

Well, I don't know, but I'll pretend to whilst I finish the story off. Writing the story even yielded a little enjoyable research: flight manoeuvres. I was able to learn a little bit about the principles of flying: and boy are they fun.

It's all about the balance between kinetic and potential energy... which makes perfect sense, since I'm more than familiar with Newton's laws of motion. But obviously, these get applied to planes, and I like to think they get applied to pegasi too. Sure, they may be magical... but if it means researching some cool stuff, I'm all for over-analysing things.

Have a good one!
