Okay, I admit it, I'm probably not your mom. But odds are I'm old enough to be. Now with Patreon account (under alarajrogers) and short stories on Amazon (under Alara Rogers).

    Dream log, epic Fluttercord edition

Had a dream during a nap that is perfectly suited to be a story; I'm not even sure I need to tweak it.

So in the dream, Fluttershy was dying of old age, and Discord couldn't fix it. (She also had insulin-resistant diabetes, but that's kind of less important.) Discord was very upset by this, and decided to take drastic steps to prevent it.

Dammit, just discovered a friend here's been dead for two years...

Today I learned that Jordan died in April 2021, and I had no idea. I was re-reading some of my older fanfics, saw his comments, thought, "Huh, I wonder how Jordan's doing", and the answer is, he's not. Dammit.

    FUCKING DONE FINALLY

"The God of Breaking Rules In The Land of the Dead" is one of my oldest stories on this site. It's not my oldest incomplete -- "The King Who Would Be Man" and "Stumble In My Footsteps" are both older, all part of my initial rush in 2013-14 when I'd first gotten into the fandom and the writing came like a river. But it is old, posted almost 10 years ago (closer to 9 years, 11 months), and

A thing y'all should maybe know

I may or may not make the change here on Fimfiction, but on Archive of our Own and Fanfiction.net, I am changing my handle to Kaleidolon. Mainly as a branding differentiator between fanfic and profic. It's not like I can hide that Alara J Rogers writes fanfic, not after posting it to the Internet for literally 29 years, but when I get published in real life I want it to be slightly

Progress Bars · 2:29am Feb 6th, 2015

I have added Progress Bars to all of my incomplete stories. They're based on my outlines and notes, so nothing about them is encoded in stone -- if I estimate there are 22 chapters to a story, it may turn out there are 25 once I write them all -- but they're based on my best estimates at this time. I also noted whether chapters were completed, tightly outlined (line by line outlining), loosely outlined (I have a paragraph description of what happens in the chapter) or not outlined (I have a vague idea in my head, maybe...) and, if I have working chapter titles, I included them.

All progress bars for MLP fanfic can be found here.

I love the way you let us know your progress ahead of time, and how you make your calculations (1500 words an hours is super impressive). I'm going to take a look at Beach at the Edge of Nowhere. I'm curious though: How can you have a column for not at all outlined? You have the final word count and number of chapters, so I would think they have to be at least very loosely outlined.

They're done based on estimates. I have enough experience writing to have some vague idea of how long the plot in my head will take to tell, and I base the number of chapters on the amount of estimated story divided by the average of existing chapters. So they're really just educated guesses. I like to replace orange with yellow or light green as soon as I can. :-)

2773049 Nice, you're very organized. Do you do project management?

2773057
Not any more, thank god. :-)

That's such a neat idea! I keep track of my work but in a much rougher manner. I am tantalized by all the hints of epic-ness, write it! You are a very good writer ... I point friends at Traitor as an example of how to do POV retellings of canon.

I also friended you on Livejournal. You can see my evil conservative-libertarian blog now ... :raritywink:

185000 words of awesome Not the Hero? I can dig it.

Well, thanks, but actually I never read the friendslist from that journal. :-) Friending that journal is basically just a request for access to the friends-only original works, since it's my writing journal. I've added you back in case you have a pressing need to read about supervillains who are called on by their nemesis and former mentor to help deliver a baby. :-)

I wondered why Beach, and then I finally figured out that I never updated my master list of fics in the sticky post, so that was the only Trek story in there. :-)

I have updated. There are a lot more fics now. A lot more fics to go, because I've only gotten back to 2009, and I've been writing and posting to the Internet since 1993, so... I have a lot of fic out there. :-) But at least now I've covered back to mid-2009 or so. :-)

Where did you post it in 1993? The internet was just a bunch of university bb boards. Did you publish in a fanzine? Because if so, mad respect!

2773362
USENET. I do have a few publications in fanzines, but I was coming in just as they were dying out. Most of my stuff was going to alt.startrek.creative at the time.

2773390 That is so cool, you should do a history of fanfiction post some time. The creation of TVtropes, the growth of the community through Harry Potter and Twilight and the knock-on effect of the general YA movement, there's a ton of history lots of readers don't know about. Anyway, thanks for sharing your art with us readers for all this time!

Ah, a chapter called "Mr. Self Destruct"!

I'm showing my NIN fannishness here.

"The Gates of Hell" and "True Friends". Hype to the max.

2774820 ALL ABOARD THE ANGST HYPE TRAIN! NEXT STOP, THE GATES OF HELL!!!

Am i seeing EoO with almost all chapters finished? It can't be right....

2775952
No, that's not right. Pale green is tightly outlined, meaning I have line-by-line outlining of all the events to occur. Chapters 7-13 are tightly outlined.
