So I've entered another competition... · 6:29pm Jan 24th, 2015
An aspect of fanfiction I like in general are the periodic contests that drive a lot of very creative work. In this case, it's the More Most Dangerous Game contest sponsored by Obselescence. What the authors are asked to do is to come up with a story that delivers the feel of the original story and in general follows the same themes.
Here is my attempt at doing so for PenStrokes' Past Sins. It's called The Hatchling, and features the rebirth of Discord instead of Nightmare Moon. Of course, with a maximum of 15,000 words, I can't hope to cover as much ground as the entire 203,000 word prompt story, so I only really touch upon the fist few chapters – until the "birth" of the draconequus in question.
The plot itself is quite different from that of Past Sins, but I've tried to stay true to the focus on family life and of the parent/child bond, and this in the broad context of all the characters, not just the young Discord's adoptive family. It is set in a future some ten years after the finally of season four, and the aftermath of a war that still scars Equestrian society.
This was written over the space of three hectic weeks, in which Sharp Logic, my editor sans-pareil, went through significant challenges just getting access to electrical power and the internet! But let me be clear: he also contributed in a very major way to the conception and evolution of the plot, and so he is as much my collaborator as he is my editor. (Many, many thanks, SL!) Of course, any and all mistakes left in the text are most likely due to my last minute (unedited!) changes and are mine and mine alone. If you see any, please let me know and I'll fix them forthwith!
A final note: my thanks to Pen Stroke for writing a great story that has inspired so many authors in the brony community!
