No banners? No problem! · 3:17pm Dec 23rd, 2014

So, it probably comes as no surprise by now that banners on Fimfiction are kill. In fact, based Meeester himself confirmed it. Deader than dead. And for what purpose? To... make the site obviously less-to-do with candy-colored horses, apparently. And to make it a little less harder on the site. While a lot of people seemed awfully surprised about the development, they probably should have seen it coming, considering that it was outlined in a dev blog that knighty wrote.

Ever since Fimfiction was first created, we've had banners at the top of every page. I think they're nice, and they add some prettiness to every page. However, they also add 175px of vertical space to every page. 175px of space that isn't used for actual content on every single page. Not to mention the fact that they use a lot of bandwidth, are specific to MLP and create colour issues with the rest of the page. It's been my intention to remove them for a long time, but definitely part of what stopped me doing it for so long is the inevitable outcry from people who seem to value that 175px of pony art over 175px of content. Still, things must be done, and so I'm working on a total rework of page headers to give them actually useful content.

At least he knew what he was getting into. There's already been plenty of grumbling (and loud complaints) from various users across the site since the change was silently made overnight the other day. As useful and cool-looking as the newer header bar may have been to some, many have proven quite opposed to such a drastic change. Their reactions, of course, are perfectly understandable.

Such articulate and well-thought-out responses. Poetry in motion.

But worry not, dear readers! Where Fimfiction has decided to callously remove your precious banners, we have decided to add them ourselves! That's right; Foal Free Press understands your pain, and we wish to do the best we can to appeal to the masses. Therefore, we added a pretty little memorial banner to our site, which we will swap out for a new one now and then. (Weebly's banner coding is shite, so we have to swap out banners manually by our lonesome. We should totally write a letter, or something.)

Lest we forget.

Of course, I imagine plenty of you are gonna want banners back on Fimfic, regardless. That's okay, too! Through the magic of web plugins and l33t coding skillz, PiercingSight has made available for the Stylish plugin some code to restore banner functionality, at least partially! (A user has also put the code itself on userstyles.org, for easier installation.) The code even enables you to use your own banners, if you wanted! Will wonders never cease?

You'll need the Stylish plugin of course, which is available for Firefox and Chrome browsers-- though one also exists for Opera and Safari, for those Mac-using nerds. Sorry, DerpIEs. You've been left out in the cold on this one.

Yeah, I... I kind of got over this already. Nice thoughts though.

Frankly, I'm more surprised that people aren't raging more about how the text content is squished to the center instead of making it full-page like it used to. Unless there's a way to revert that?

Text content? If you're talking about for the contents of story chapters, then yes, there is. And there has always been one, for that matter. It just might have been set to a default because of the update, or something.

The highlighted bit adjusts the width of the overall text box. The box is always centered, but the slider lets you adjust the width to whatever minute OCD-induced increment that you please. (The other options adjust text size, line separation, font, etc.)

Actually, I was aware of that but the settings I've always used was the default one. But I did try maxing it and it still didn't feel right, not with those borders. This is going to drive me nuts for the next few days, I guess.

Or maybe the max settings now was the default settings then? God, I don't even know anymore. This medley of stealth updates is screwing with my mind, I tell you.

Man, making fun of drama is fun.

Honestly, I wonder if this is good policy or bad policy; by having no site post, there is nowhere for people to bitch, and thus, Knighty doesn't have to deal with it.

If anyone actually uses that stylish script I'll cry because it's fucking hideous.

I was a little upset when the banners left but I'm pretty much over it already. Though if someone can explain to me why banner art that was specific to mlp on a site dedicated to hosting stories about mlp was a bad thing I would love to hear it.
2672883 This however is still kind of infuriating.

....... i rather preferred it to be honest. like completely over it just being blank. sighs. gonna miss it.

2673394 Don't remove the good one then --'

What were banners like? I came in around 2015
