What is this "Anon" thing I keep seeing? By what I can tell, it's a character one either can't, or doesn't want to name.
Why is this a thing? I don't get it. Surely names aren't that hard to come up with? Am I wrong?

Anon is short for Anonymous.
Blame 4chan.
I think it's a 4chan thing. Anon is basically the reader but under the name... Anon. I personally don't mind them because I don't read them. Most are clop, though.
Glad to see an author asking about this 'anon' thing. One of my biggest peeves is seeing a character referred to as 'anon'. Sack up and just pick a name.
I would like it to, if they would think of a name instead of Anon.
I just don´t like it to always read the same name (Anon,Anon,Anon)
They could call them tomato, potato, Jack, Carl or any other name, not every names sounds good, but there are enough to choose from.
I always like the characters a bit more if they have an own Name. I don´t know if it really gives them a little bit more of an own personality, but i like to read a real name.
Anon is used so the reader can effectively replace that character of the story with them selves. Find an anon story you like the look of read it and use your imagination to read the story as if its happening to you. More often then not its for the sake of shipping. I like them (the good ones that is)
2617733 Well I know what it means, I was just curious as to why it seems to be such a popular trend.
4chan is apparently my answer
Well it depends on the POV. For example, if you're creative enough to act as the character and think like him, you can easily come up with a suitable name for him. Nevertheless, if you lack creativity or if you're passing through a 'blank phase'* you'll find it very difficult to find a name. I particularly don't like the term Anon, but it suits for someone like the second example.
*I call 'blank phase' the ones which are creative, a lot, but for a period of time can't think of anything. It happens very often with me :/
2624404 I'm sorry to hear that
2624418 No prob, Bit. I'm used to it.
