Someone actually wrote it! Why does no one tell me these things?! · 8:01am Oct 9th, 2014
You might remember my April Fools post earlier this year, where I suggested, among other things, that Celestia and Luna were Windegos hit by the friendship magic in the Hearth's Warming Eve tale. It's actually one of the ideas I'm rather fond of.
So just now, I was poking around with my new user style, making a few changes, when what do I see on the screen in front of me?
She is the last. All her kin are gone. They'd either been blown apart by the Friendship spell so many ages ago or, in the case of her sister, changed their diet from hate to love. Cryoxia is the last of the windigos, but she is determined to be different, to never go back to those days ever again.
She'll make friendship from hate. She'll adopt an alicorn foal as her sister. She'll take physical form and learn how to move the celestial orbs with her mind. Celestial... has a nice ring to it. And she'll ally with the other nations in the world, establish friendship and preach harmony, no matter how they may diminish her food source. She'll make a world so wonderful that it will starve her to death.
Or die trying.
Okay, sure, it's not exactly the same... which probably means it was simply a matter of great(?) minds thinking alike... I certainly hope that's the case, otherwise I'd be pretty annoyed that I had to chance across it myself.
It's kind of frustrating, actually. I've found, I think, three pieces of fan art for Sharing the Night online—which is great! Unfortunately, I only found out about them months after the fact, after the artists' had given up on me—that's not great!
I know, I know, I'm not perfect. Authors have sent me fics inspired by Sharing the Night that are still sitting in my backlog, and I feel terrible about that, but at least I know about them. It baffles me that someone can be so inspired as to create a fan work and not let the person who inspired you know.
In fact, merely-inspired stories aside, I think the only person who ever actually said anything to me was Mr-Afrox who PMed me about a song. I always intended to get together all the fanart and such I could find and post it in one blog post, but that... never happened, so here's that:
Come on, people! If you do something Sharing-the-Night-based, let me know!
I had a dream about Sharing the Night... >_> Does that count?
Oh, I'd forgotten that post of yours by the time the story rolled around or I'd have let you know. I think it would have worked better if Luna had been also a Windigo, too, instead of an adopted sister, making Twilight the first pony alicorn, but what have have is still pretty good.
That is a pretty nifty idea. It might (or might not) explain why Tia and Luna are different, and kindasorta where they came from. It'd make a good one-shot, anyway.

Could also make a good "Equestria From Dust"-esque story where Luna and Celestia build up Equestria from after the moment they were Friendship-Nuked. Not exactly the same, but something along those lines. I'm tempted to read this "Coldhearted" story, at least. Definitely sounds interesting.
If it makes you feel better, I was planing on taking a run with the idea later in the year.
Title:
Shadow and the Darkness
Pitch:
Set in the late days of the windigo winter. Story follows the story of a group of ponies trying to migrate to the new land, as they are being stalked by two legendary windigos: Shadow and Darkness.
Now stalked by the demons of strife in the summer lands, the group of ponies try to understand their clever foes. But one can not hate what they understand. When a connection is made, the power of friendship begins to reforge the demon’s bodies. Though the old names have been forgotten Shadow and Darkness still watch their ponies from atop canterlot. Celestia and Luna will never forget those ponies from long ago.
Oh Casty! Don't take it as us not telling you! Take it as us, your loyal and loving readers, leaving the joys of discovery for you to enjoy!
Celestia as a former windigo is certainly an idea that solely belongs as an April Fools joke.
And Luna still happens to be an alicorn, for convenience sake.
And Chrysalis also being a windigo that spontaneously shifted from passively absorbing hate to actively feeding on love... and then got a physical body... and stopped making things cold... and then also turned into a bug... and spawned a whole race of bug ponies...
Yeah, far-fetched doesn't even begin to cover it.
People reaaaaaally need to think of the details of such things... especially to take time consider if any of their idea makes sense given the facts already known. This is CRITICALLY important if one wished to tie the story directly to the canon. Inconsistencies are far more glaring in those instances.
