New Story - The Legend of Falling Rocks, Buffalo Brave · 7:35am Aug 16th, 2014

Some time ago, Equestria Daily decided to run a contest where you write about ponies from an outsider (non-pony) point of view. I saw it, but didn't have any ideas for it, so dismissed it. Heck, I even helped edit a couple stories for the contest.

A few days ago, I decided to write a story I'd been putting off writing for a while - The Legend of Falling Rocks, Buffalo Brave. I finished it last night, and submitted it to FIMFiction.

I didn't put two and two together until tonight.

So, apparently I'm in a contest now!

The Legend of Falling Rocks, Buffalo Brave

[MYTHOLOGY]

Long ago, before the ponies came to this land, the buffalo roamed free across the hills and plains, and the stampedes could run from mountain to sea without fear.

In those days, a buffalo brave, Falling Rocks, became legend. Come, listen to the tale of how he saved his people.

The story is stylistically based on Native American legends, and is inspired, at its heart, by a story my dad told me long ago while sitting around a campfire. It contains a retelling, from a different point of view, of an important event in pony history, as well as a Just So story (also known as an etiological myth), and the story of how the buffalo went from stampeding all across the land to being confined to the scrubland around Appleloosa.

Like many Native American legends, these stories may have been influenced by the ponies who came to their land and came to dominate so much of their lives. It is hard to say how much of them is true, how much is legend, and how much was just made up by a buffalo to answer the question of a calf, who then passed it on to their calf, and so on.

But I hope you enjoy them nonetheless.
