In trying to fix that, I ended up changing the whole theme (not an expert on tumblr, sadly). But I do now have a couple of links to the ask box (one in the corner and the other on the bottom of the page).

Tumblr themes can be a pain for finding just the right design. When push comes to shove, you can solve simple things like a missing ask button with HTML. If you want some help customizing it a bit, I can assist with that. I'm no expert either, but I've tweaked some tumblr themes in the past.
