    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Okay, I'm Bored · 5:55pm Jun 24th, 2014

Ask me stuff. Really, if you're curious about anything that I may like or dislike, or about how I developed The Rock Farmer's Daughters or my OC Tomato Sandwich, or if you want to hear a funny story concerning a certain subject, ask and ye shall receive.

Of course, please keep the questions SFW. Going into that area makes me uncomfortable.

Well, I would certainly like to hear a funny story about a certain subject... :scootangel:

2230700 Well, name a subject. I'll see if I can rack my brains for a silly memory. (Sorry if you think I meant I'll write a short MLP story :twilightsheepish: ).

2230708 Have you eaten a cheese sandwich after Pinkie Pride? What were your thoughts?

2230772
Been eating cheese sandwiches my whole life, actually. They just happen to be my favorite kind of sandwich, and it was pretty cool that there was a pony named Cheese Sandwich. So, I have eaten plenty of them after Pinkie Pride.

As for my thoughts, they've ranged from "Do I just like Cheese Sandwich because he's named after my favorite food?" to "Ehehe, I'm eating a sandwich," and to "What if I had named my ponysona Cheese Sandwich instead of Sketcha Holic? That would've been awkward..."

And now I want to have a cheese sandwich.

2230800 Ah yes. Growing up in a cheesy country (teehee) I have eaten cheese sandwiches my whole life too...

That sounded bad, didn't it? I'm eating a party pony! :pinkiegasp:

Ah, alrighty. Here we go:

1. What is your least favourite ship involving Cheese?
2. How did you come up with the name Cortland?
3. Do you have any other AU story ideas regarding CheesePie?
4. Do you ship anything other than CheesePie?
5. How open are you regarding your status of brony? Or pegasister, whatever you prefer.
6. Pinkie or Pinkamena. Which design do you prefer? Simply put, curly or straight mane?
7. What's your favourite song in the show not including anything from Pinkie Pride?
8. Has there ever been a fic you've read which had very good writing and an interesting plot, but such a terrible ending you slammed your keyboard? Or just found terrible.
9. What's your opinion on anthro? And for that matter, anthro Cheese?
10. What's a huge d'aww moment for you in the show not including Pinkie Pride?

I tell you, it has made me SAD to develop lactose intolerance right around now. I lived in England and I practically lived on cheese. I hope it's temporary, or at least that some of it is. Cheddar seems to be ok.

I also say you can go right ahead and ignore any questions that are too personal or uncomfortable. I would.

And besides, what I want to know is about Tomato! Is he still in college? Does he have a job? A girlfriend? Any hobbies? What about their parents? And most of all, do they live in Neigh Jersey? Inquiring minds want to know!

2230919 All right, here we go:

1. My least favorite? Hmm... I'll have to go with CheesePommel. Putting aside my love for CheesePie, there's just something about it that just rubs me the wrong way. I've yet to see a good reason for shipping it other than "he can cheer her up".
2. Funny story about that. I originally was looking for a possible name for a foal that AJ would have, and I came across Cortland in a list of varieties of apple. After a while, the name somehow became grating in my head, and when first writing RFD, I decided to stick it on an antagonist of the story.
3. Indeed I do! I have this one other AU idea where Pinkie stays the same, but Cheese never left Manehattan. And they meet. But, I don't really have any meat to add to that story...
4. Well, none that are active, but I do have soft spots for Soarinjack and Rainbow with an Apple stallion. I have no idea why.
5. Eh, I'd prefer not to be called either. I'll just be a simple MLP fan, thank you very much.
6. I think I like the curly mane. It's fluffy and reminds me of cotton candy. Yum.
7. Well, I love the Smile Song, but I also love Apples to the Core.
8. There was this one where a pegasus from Cloudsdale attempted to cover the world in clouds to promote pegasus supremacy... but I couldn't finish it due to the blatant and grating presence of TwiDash. It was an unnecessary romance... :twilightangry2:
9. It creeps me out. :applejackconfused:
10. I'd have to say when the Cake Twins say Pinkie's name. I'm a big softie when it comes to babies and small children.

Ah, yes, funny things about Tomato. This should be fun. :trixieshiftright:
--Yes, he's still in college. He's pretty much one of those that wants to focus on school most of the time, though he earns a few bits on the side working for a book store.
--He has a few friends who are mares; he feels the most comfortable around one named Flora Peace (her special talent is helping others relax and release stress). However, he doesn't want to go into romance territory quite yet; he fears he'd be terrible at maintaining a relationship.
--He's a bookworm like Twilight is. He also enjoys playing a little hacky-sack, cooking, and, believe or not, he's a pretty good singer. Also, he has a little quirk where he just strums his forelock curl when he's bored, and he uses his tail for a lot of tasks.
--Simply put, I imagine Cheese and Tomato's dad as a workaholic, and their mom as an overbearing nag. They get the brothers' nerves on edge.
--Oh, dear, here's a toughie. I never really could decide just where they lived in that area (doesn't help that I live in the western US). Note that the two fics starring them took place inside their home, which I never specified was a house or an apartment. :twilightsheepish:

Definitely some interesting stuff.

I think the problem with CheesePommel is the same with any better known character paired with a side character/background pony; it's a lot of work to create a relationship between them. Cheese is only as easily discernible as he is because we have some key parts of his history and life to build off of. He was a major character in Pinkie Pride so we got a chance to see some significant characterization, and his status as a party pony like Pinkie allows us to compare him to her to find some reasonable extrapolations about their differences.

Coco is nice, but she's not really a significant character in Rarity Takes Manehattan, so we learn next to nothing about her. More than we do about a background pony, but not a lot more. She also hasn't been around for very long, so she hasn't had a chance to be very reoccurring, and thus it's an uphill battle to create her as a more realized individual. Most people don't really want to take that kind of effort, and I don't blame them.

As someone who once tried tinkering around with a Gustave/Pinkie ship fic, I realized how hard it is. Worse yet, just giving the undeveloped character a history isn't enough. You have to figure out why they hit it off and what they enjoy doing together. A ship really is about creating the character's interactions.

It would end up feeling the same if Cheese was paired with someone else relatively unknown, but since Coco is rather popular, purely based on her cuteness, that one ends up standing out as kind of bland. :duck:

Yes, I went there. I'm open-minded, but I'm also a realist. :rainbowlaugh:

Also, questions. I guess I should have one.

Who do you think canon universe Cheese Sandwich hangs out with? Like, who would be his friends, out of any and all characters in the show? :pinkiehappy:

You know what I think, what I really, really think?
I think Coco would throw out all of Cheese's shirts, that's what I think. And I don't mean they would discuss it. Just one day, oopsi-doodle, "oh I'm so sorry honey your shirts all wound up in the incinerator!"

I suspect that those of us who really enjoy Cheese enjoy him for his uniqueness and eccentricities, and it would break my heart to see any character put a dent in that. It's one of many reasons my Cheese avoids going home: his Mom keeps trying to fix him up with Balcony Flowerbox and get him good and entrapped in the suburban life of Bayroan, Neigh Jersey. But enough about me and my headcanon.

Yeah, pretty much on the same page about Cheese's mom and dad (depends on whether we're talking EG Cheese or regular Cheese, but yeah). I think there's a reason people come up with parallel headcanons like that, even if it's no more than that itinerant lifestyle does not scream "I cannot wait for Sunday so I can go and have lunch with Mom!"

I didn't know she had access to hammerspace. Does he actually do his laundry at any point? I could see him going, "NOOO! My lucky shirt!"

Then he'd never wash his clothes again.

But seriously, I don't think she's destroy them. Not unless she's heartless. I think she'd cringe a lot, but she'd eventually get over it if she was serious. If she destroys his shirts, then I'm pretty sure that's grounds for leaving in his book. :derpytongue2:

Exactly. Regardless of particular details, one has to assume they're unpleasant in realistic ways. Those two are the most obvious, perhaps a little stereotypical, but certainly credible. At the very least, simple disappointment would be enough to make things awkward. :twilightsheepish:

2231498 I dunno. I kind of think she would! I mean, how long do you last working for Suri Polomare without developing a bunch of passive-aggressive defense mechanisms? At least Suri would say, "I'm throwing all your shirts out now, mmm'kay?"

My mom has had to throw out a lot of shirts in her time, but in fairness to her, my Dad's philosophy used to be "wear the ugly ones more so they'll wear out sooner." He hadn't yet realized the Great Truth that ugly clothes don't wear out, nor that guys with olive skin look like death on toast when wearing orange and mustard colors. So a lot of shirts he didn't even like Mysteriously Disappeared and were replaced with shirts in colors he looked nice in, and he didn't even fully realize what happened. He was permitted to keep the ones he really cared about, including the shirt she made for their wedding day (d'awww.)

Hahaha, fair point, although that just makes me love Suri more. That's a fantastic hook for a romantic slice of life right there. :rainbowlaugh:

But as far as Cheese goes, then the question becomes much more complicated. On the one hand, I haven't seen him in anything ugly yet. His shirt is tacky, but not ugly. So then it's a fine line issue of what is borderline acceptable? Also, one has to question how attached he is. I'm betting some of those shirts are purely for parties too, so they probably only exist in hammerspace most of the time.

Then again, my theory is that he only owns one shirt. The rest are technically party favors that he hands out for themed parties, but he'll wear one in emergencies. Everything else he's got is much classier or for work. :raritywink:

Sneaky Edit: I'm now imagining him doing his laundry while taking a shower/bath, at the same time. Efficiency!

2231363
Hmm...
Well, if anything, I like the idea of Cheese being buddies with Braeburn. :derpytongue2: And I imagine that he invites The Great and Powerful Trixie to perform at his parties sometimes.

...I'm so unoriginal. :twilightsheepish:

2231460
Oh, goodness, not the incinerator! :raritydespair:

Yeesh, and in my little continuity, Tommy was stuck with those folks after Cheese ran off.

And if my mom were like that, I wouldn't like to have Sunday dinner with her either.

2233692
No fear. Original has nothing to do with sensible. The two can coincide, but they don't have to. :raritywink:

I think him making friends with Braeburn is a logical choice, out of all the other stallions out there. Brae was at one of his parties early on in Pinkie Pride, and he seems like such a welcoming and friendly pony. Then there's the latent western theme in the other half of Cheese's get-up. It's possible they might not become friends, but I think it's just as likely that they might. Both of them seem to like kids and they may have a little more in common. Who knows?

Same for Trixie. I think that varies a lot more, since she has such a domineering personality, and in some ways so does Cheese. There's a stronger chance things could go hay-wire, but I like the idea that they've met and they have either hung out before or he's asked her to join in the fun and perform for a party before. I think Trixie is fun and I want to give her a chance. What better way than with a Cheese party? :pinkiehappy:
