I can't say why he acts the way he does, but I sure like how he progresses
I like how it is a slow progress that is not just him being angry all the time and then after one certain event, they are suddenly the best friends ever. I have seen so many authors fall into this trap and it is quite refreshing to see a skilled author write a slowly growing friendship rather than instant.
