    Season 9 Retrospective

Warning: Season-wide spoilers abound. Proceed with caution.

I need to write this while the emotions of the finale are still fresh in my mind. Though the stories will continue in the comics (and countless fanfics, I'm sure), this is truly the end of an animation era. So, as a final season, did it go out with a bang, or a whimper? Follow me below the break to see my take.

Random Thoughts: The Beginning of the End

Warning: Spoilers abound. Proceed with caution.

Mama pajama, that was a rush. I really feel like something was rekindled here. Season 8 was alright, but I will admit it didn't have the same energy that made me fall in love with this show. This episode, however, had that energy in spades. Follow me below the break as I just gush a bit on what an epic season opener this was.

    Season 8 Retrospective

Welp, that was fun, huh? I know for most of you, the season ended earlier thanks to the Australian broadcast, but I didn't have the luxury of checking that out. Also, I'd rather do things by the book.

    Random Thoughts: The Washouts

Warning: Spoilers abound. Proceed with caution.

Let me just start off by saying great googily moogily, what a weekend this was! I thought Season 7 had scheduling problems, but this was just insane! Well, at least it's still trackable. Unlike some other shows I can mention *cough*TheLoudHouse*cough*.

Headcanon Corner: Breezies 101 · 1:16pm Mar 3rd, 2014

Warning: Spoilers from the latest episode, It Ain't Easy Being Breezies, abound. Proceed with caution.

Normally when I have a headcanon, I write a story about it. You can see this in stories such as The Importance of a Wingpony, Heart of Silver, A Real Legend, and Spitfire Stumbles. However, this is gonna be a special case, because, well, I can't make this interesting. At the very least, I can't make it compelling enough to be its own story. I originally wanted to make a story where Flitter and Cloudchaser switch places (CC guides the breezies while Flit goes through Wonderbolt training), but then I remembered that Flitter was already competing in the Equestria Games (according to the episode Rainbow Falls, anyway), so the hijinks count was pretty low on that end.

So, this dry lecture will have to do. If it makes you feel any better, just imagine Flitter explaining this to Cloudchaser or something. That's what I'm doing.

Now, what do we know about the breezies? The most basic term I can think of to describe them is ponified fairies. This is reflected both in their design and their language/accent, which to my knowledge is supposed to be Celtic. Anyway, according to the episode, they leave their homes to gather pollen in the Mild West (as I like to call it), and then travel back with the help of the pegasi. The pegasi create a breeze that activates their magic, which in turn protects their pollen from going bad.

Now, this is just me, but I believe this has the makings of a symbiotic relationship. The breezies can't carry their pollen without the pegasi. But, what do the pegasi get in return? Well, user MyHobby had an interesting theory that perhaps the breezies use the pollen to create a special medicine, similar to bacta in Star Wars. While we haven't seen this medicine, I think that's as likely an explanation as any. And because of this relationship, it's very likely that the pegasi and the breezies have had this system for years. All of the pegasi in the episode seem to know what they're doing, even Rainbow Dash, who admitted that this was her first time making the breeze.

One plothole that I've seen pointed out is that if the breezies need the breeze to protect their pollen, why didn't it go bad when they spent the day at Fluttershy's cottage? Well, here's my best explanation. The pollen, as you will notice, is carried in open sacks. That's not a good way to carry pollen, especially through the air. It's very likely that it would spill, or a bee would steal it. Ergo, the magic that protects the pollen must be some sort of forcefield that keeps the pollen in the pouches and possibly a pheromone to force back predators. And why didn't it go bad while they were lounging in the cottage? Because they weren't out in the open. The pouches were in no danger whatsoever.

So, that's my basic take on things. I know it doesn't answer all the problems with the episode, but hopefully, I've opened the door for some discussion. Or at least some world-building fics.

Edit: Well, the new character tags have sparked an idea of how I can bring this headcanon to light in story form. It's still in the development stage right now, but once it's ready, you guys will be in for a real treat.

Edit II: Done and done.

Celtic? Huh that's new, I thought German myself and a few others think Swedish or related language.

I like it!
